A Saugus High School student walked onto campus on Thursday, November 14, his 16th birthday, took a .45 semiautomatic pistol out of his backpack, opened fire on five of his classmates, then shot himself in the head. The entire episode was caught on surveillance video and lasted just 16 seconds.

Nathaniel Berhow is in “grave condition” at Henry Mayo Hospital in the Santa Clarita Valley, and sources tell RedState that he has been declared brain dead and is on life support. Berhow’s father died approximately two years ago.

RedState was the first to report about an Instagram account reportedly belonging to the shooter, in which the bio said, “Saugus, have fun at school tomorrow.”

The bio was changed and an additional post created after the shooting, leading many to believe that it was not the shooter’s account.

At an afternoon press conference, however, LA County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Kent Wegener said the account was the alleged shooter’s.

I can confirm that was posted on his account and I can also confirm that it has been changed since this incident, which means there is somebody else that has access to this account,” Wegener said Thursday.

Authorities do not know who changed the biography or the motivation behind changing the account information, but have included it into their investigation.

As of Thursday evening, the Instagram account was shut down.

Authorities also claimed that while there were two recent threats involving Saugus High School, both were investigated “and had no nexus to this subject.” But Saugus student Ryan Payae told CBS Los Angeles:

“We found an Instagram account, like in their bio it said ‘Saugus have fun at school tomorrow,’ so I got like speechless and I didn’t know what to do, so I reported it to police.”

Santa Clarita, where Saugus High is located, is home to many law enforcement officers who serve in agencies throughout Southern California. LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva reported that an off-duty Sheriff’s deputy and “two off-duty police officers with family members at Saugus High School were the first to respond.” A law enforcement source told RedState that “Sheriffs stood on the perimeter and wouldn’t run into the school. [Officers from other agencies] lost their s**t on the sheriffs and ran into the school.”
