Breaking: Car Attack Near Brandenburg Gate in Berlin Leaves One Dead, 16 Injured

Multiple international outlets report that on Saturday, a car drove through a crowd of spectators near the Brandenburg Gate at the height of the Berlin Pride parade. One person is reported dead, with 16 others injured.

A car drove into a crowd during Berlin's famed Pride parade on Saturday, killing one person and injuring at least 15, prompting police to call off the event in the German capital hours after it had begun.

Police said some of the victims had life-threatening injuries. Firefighters and ambulances were out with many emergency staffers at the scene to attend to the victims.

The BBC reported the number of those injured as 16, adding to the initial reporting by the AP, above.

According to police, a white van had driven into Tiergarten park, which was just off the route that the Pride march had passed along earlier, and hit several people before colliding with a tree. Police could not say how many officers had been deployed to the scene but that it was "definitely a lot of police." They said they were searching for suspects.

"We are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects," a police officer said on a short video released on the Berlin police account on X.

Police spokesperson Alexander Klute told The Associated Press later that "at this point, we don't know anything about any possible motives, the identity of the perpetrator or the perpetrators, or anything of that nature."

The translation of this X post reads:

It is an attack on our free and open society - after a peaceful and colorful CSD, the assembly for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal way. Berlin is the city of freedom - and our freedom has been attacked in the most horrific way today. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. I thank the emergency services who were immediately on site and did everything in their power. And I trust the police and security authorities, who will investigate at full speed.

Berlin has suffered such attacks before. In December 2016, a truck rammed through a Christkindl Market, killing 12 with 56 injured. In 2022, a car ploughed through a historical Berlin square, resulting in one death and over 30 injured. 

In December 2024, Magdeburg, Germany, suffered another tragic car attack at their Christmas market which resulted in five dead and 200 injured, 41 of those critically.
