McDonald's Brings the Nostalgia for America's 250th, With the Return of Its Classic 'Fried' Apple Pie

The phrase "as American as apple pie" was coined in 1924, so the iconography of over 100 years is branded on this stylized classic over the fast food landscape and in every American diner across the country. Which is why this announcement by the McDonald's Corporation is bound to evoke excitement and nostalgia in the hearts of Baby Boomers and Generation X.

For America's 250th anniversary, McDonald's is bringing back its classic "Fried" Apple Pie. You heard it here first.

McDonald’s is frying up some apple pies to honor America’s 250th birthday.

The company said Tuesday it’s bringing back fried apple pies for the first time in more than three decades. They’ll be available at most U.S. restaurants for a limited time starting June 23.

McDonald’s is one of several fast food companies offering semiquincentennial treats. Burger King recently debuted its Firecracker Cookie Pie, which has a sugar cookie crust and red, white and blue star-shaped sprinkles. Sonic is offering a red, white and blue slush float for $2.50. Hardee's has an iced Star-Spangled Biscuit with red and blue sprinkles.

In 1992, McDonald's switched to a baked version of its Apple Pie, which was right around the time I stopped eating them. The baked version is terrible: flavorless, tasteless, and actually higher in calories. On June 23, the official day the limited reintroduction of the Fried Apple Pie starts, I, along with my fellow GenXers and Boomers, will make a stop at McDonald's and take a walk down nostalgia lane while we partake of this quintessentially American dessert. The Fried Apple Pie will be available for two weeks nationwide at participating McDonald's locations, while supplies last.

Here are some fun facts about the McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie:

The Fried Apple Pie was first introduced in 1968, the same year the Big Mac was launched. A McDonald's franchisee in Tennessee named Litton Cochran created the rectangular deliciousness that damaged the roof of your mouth with its atomic-grade filling, which could only be cooled with a glass of milk.

Yeah, fond memories.

As stated above, 1992 was the year that in America, the Fried Pie was replaced with a baked one, which was the downfall of the product in my opinion. There is even a Facebook group titled “Bring Back the Original McDonald’s Fried Apple Pie,” which has 130 members. So, no doubt, these members will be stopping by their local McDonald's franchise in order to stock up — hopefully, those Fried Apple Pies still freeze well.

On Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, they are installing a 35-foot Fried Apple Pie near the McDonald's Chicago headquarters, also in honor of America's 250th. According to the corporation, the giant Fried Apple Pie will stay in place until July 4.

God Bless America!
