But Wait, There's More: 'Iowa Educator' Ian Roberts' Academic Record Unravels Along With His Sketchy Past

ICE via AP

In the case of illegal alien and great Black educational hope "Dr." Ian Roberts, the former Des Moines School Superintendent, who on Friday was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a removal order, the plot is thickening like a properly made custard. As RedState reported, after ICE detained Roberts, Jackie Norris, the chair of the Des Moines School Board and Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate, called for "radical empathy" until all the facts were out concerning Roberts and his record. Not all the facts are out, but we now know enough of them to surmise that either there were a whole bunch of people who were hoodwinked and bamboozled by this con man, or a whole bunch of people turned a blind eye. My bets are on the latter.

The Des Moines School Board met again on Tuesday in order to address the latest set of facts received, and to discuss Roberts' resignation submitted through his attorney. The board voted unanimously to accept the resignation. It's amazing how procedure and verification matter after the fact.

WATCH:

BREAKING: Des Moines Public Schools Chair Jackie Norris has confirmed that Superintendent Ian Roberts failed to provide proof he was legally eligible to work for the district — and the board has now moved to accept his resignation.

Norris: “He did not provide the board with the information we requested. The school board made the difficult but right decision given the circumstances.”

The red flags were obvious from the start. The board ignored them and hired him anyway.

This isn’t just a mistake — it’s dereliction of duty. The entire board should resign in shame.

Wait, What? Iowa School Superintendent Is an Illegal Alien

In a Tuesday press conference, Roberts' attorney Alfredo Parrish said Roberts is being held at a jail in Sioux City, Iowa, and Parrish said that his firm has filed a request for stay of Roberts' deportation order in the Omaha, Nebraska, federal immigration court. Parrish then confirmed Roberts would indeed resign from the superintendent position.

“He understands that he has the support (of the community), and it really gives him inspiration,” Parrish said. “His spirits are high. He was very well-engaged in all our discussions this morning, for about the last two hours.”

Community support that Roberts does not deserve, yet still receives. Students, parents, and faculty should be angry over Roberts' lies, deceptions, and making a mockery of the public trust. Instead, they are upset at ICE for exposing him for the fraud he is and his being forced to suffer the consequences for his malfeasance.

We live in an upside-down world.

Here are the latest updates on what we now know about the "Iowa Educator."

Roberts Was NEVER an American Citizen and Was Never Authorized to Work in the U.S.

In the press conference, attorney Parrish never denied that Roberts was in the country illegally, nor did he produce any naturalization documents. From the legalese spoken during the press conference, it is clear that Roberts has been dodging ICE for quite some time. Parrish said of all the immigration wranglings that it was a “complex case.”

You bet your sweet bippy.

Attorney Alfredo Parrish, representing Roberts, confirmed that Roberts was a citizen of Guyana and served in the country’s military, but said his office was trying to work on getting more information on the immigration case proceedings that led to his arrest by ICE. In April 2025, a Texas immigration judge had decided not to reopen Roberts’ case in absentia.

Parrish said Roberts had received a letter from the prior attorney for his immigration case in Texas which said “his case had been closed successfully, and he was under the impression that it had been.” Parrish said his firm is in the process of filing a motion to reopen Roberts’ immigration case

“There are several jurisdictions that are involved, there are several law enforcement entities that are involved,” Parrish said. “… There (are) so many entities involved that we have touched bases with to try to work through this, through the consulate in New York for Guyana, through all the many other entities we’ve been trying to work through this case with. We want you to know that Dr. Roberts’ greatest concern is about his students who he actually loves, and the students who love him back, and his staff.”

Roberts Is Not Really a Doctor, but He Played One on TV...

The Des Moines Register confirmed on Tuesday that Roberts' claim that he had received his doctoral degree from Morgan State University in Baltimore was a falsehood. While attorney Laura Powell documents that he received an Ed.D. from an online university in 2021, years before that, he continued to further the lie that his doctorate was from Morgan State.

A university spokesperson spoke with the Register on Monday and said that Roberts had attended their school from the Fall of 2002 through the Spring of 2007, but had not obtained a degree from the school.

Roberts House of Cards Tumbles

Powell has done a deep dive into Roberts' past, documented her findings in a detailed X thread, and has written some recent articles about this debacle. According to Powell's findings, aside from Roberts being born in Guyana and the fact that he did indeed serve in the Guyanese military, the rest of his background and credentials are published fiction.

And then there is his “life story” – or rather, his competing life stories. All reliable evidence points to Guyana as his birthplace, where he was schooled until the early 1990s. Yet in interviews he sometimes claimed to have been born and raised in Brooklyn, the child of a single mother. That contradicts his own statement that she immigrated only in the 2000s, by which time he was already in his 30s. Even his age shifts – legal records say 1970, while Roberts himself has variously given 1973 or 1978.

Ironically, the most colorful elements of his tale appear to be true. A retired police commissioner in Guyana confirmed that Roberts graduated from officer training and joined the country’s police force. He was a standout runner in college in the United States and even represented Guyana in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. But once you reach other aspects of his life – degrees, awards, academic achievements – the truth grows hazier.

Roberts Has Been Married Since 2017

Powell unearthed marriage records for Roberts dated from 2017. According to other records Powell discovered, Roberts was married before and divorced her in 2006. Roberts' current wife, Lenisha Broadway Roberts, originally hailed from Arkansas, but now lives in Texas. There are no records of Roberts ever having been domiciled in either state. Somewhere along the way, Roberts managed to obtain a Social Security number.

Here is Roberts’s marriage certificate from his 2017 marriage. (I removed a couple of identifying details of other parties, and SSNs were redacted by the county.)

He married a woman who lived in Arkansas, and who now lives in Texas, according to her online bios. Although Roberts has worked in many different places, there is no sign of a connection to either locale.

They both worked for Lighthouse Academies at the same time, which is likely how they met. His date of birth on the marriage certificate is 1970, and his place of birth is Guyana.

He was previously married and divorced in 2006. It appears he put a Social Security Number on the form.

Roberts Has a Protective Order Lodged Against Him

But Roberts' domestic life gets even more dramatic. He has baby mamas in other states, and Powell documents that he is still having his wages garnished for child support.

Some of these court cases from Maryland are not Ian Andre Roberts, the Des Moines superintendent, but most of them appear to be. The records show he had children with a previous wife, who he divorced in 2006, and it appears he had at least one child out of wedlock with another woman. Roberts has continued to have his wages garnished due to one of these lawsuits, which still has not been closed.

In a Wednesday discovery, Powell uncovered that Roberts had been accused of having an affair with another man's wife, and the husband filed a protective order against Roberts in 2023 for an alleged act of violence toward him.

In August 2023, the same month Ian Roberts assumed the role of Des Moines superintendent, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office served him with a protective order issued by a Jackson County, Missouri, court. The Sheriff’s Office refused to share additional details, saying that the court had ordered the record sealed.

A source told me the protective order stemmed from an incident where Joseph Hill confronted Roberts about having sexual relations with Hill’s wife. The source alleges Roberts pointed a gun at Hill during a conflict. Hill was arrested, though there is no record of charges filed.

I obtained an incident report from the Kansas City Police Department about a domestic dispute between Hill and his wife, but it lacks details that would confirm Roberts’s involvement. While I did verify the existence of the protective order against Roberts, I want to emphasize that I cannot corroborate the source’s account of Roberts’s involvement in this domestic incident, due to the confidentiality of the records.

If I worked for a big newspaper, we would have someone going through court records to dig up more information. If you’re in Kansas City and can access these records in person, please do and share your findings.

This matter is especially significant because Hill’s now ex-wife, who filed for divorce shortly after the incident, is Nicole Price. Price runs Lively Paradox, where Roberts has claimed employment since January 2020. She has also served as a character reference for Roberts in media reports following his arrest.

I will provide updates if new information emerges.

Dr. Nicole Price, the now-ex-wife in this equation, remains a close colleague of Roberts. Since 2020, Roberts has done motivational speaking and advocacy work with her organization Living Paradox, and he also co-authored his book with her. And keep in mind, Roberts is still married to Lenisha Broadway Roberts, who one can only surmise is in on his grift. Powell also discovered mortgage documents for a property he and his wife purchased in November of 2024. The ICE removal order was filed in April of 2024. Powell asks a salient question: Did Roberts lie on his mortgage application?

The Millcreek School Board, whose district Roberts worked before he moved to the Des Moines Superintendent position, is big mad, and talking about litigation against the company they hired to vet him.

The Millcreek School Board has issued a statement on former superintendent Ian Roberts, calling his breach of trust ” unconscionable,” and they’ve started the process of holding the people behind his hiring accountable.

In their statement, the school board said they’re “incensed” over the recent reports of Roberts’ lack of citizenship status and alleged false doctorate in education after he was taken into custody by ICE on September 26.

They also said they’ve had their solicitors begin reaching out to both authorities, along with finding out whether they have any legal claims against Roberts over any potential fraudulent representation and aggressively pursuing them.

Additionally, the school board said they’re looking into any potential litigation against the firm they sourced, Ray and Associates, Inc. back in 2020, which would eventually hire Roberts.

Millcreek paid Ray and Associates, Inc. $19,000 to do this vetting. As RedState reported, his tenure at Millcreek was passable at best, and he left the district holding the bag on a $250,000 employee settlement. Every person involved in this decision — from choosing this firm to continually giving Roberts a pass — should be fired. The same goes for the Des Moines School Board and district people involved in Roberts' hiring.

In Powell's article, she places the blame and shame where it belongs.

The officials who hired Roberts failed in their basic duty to fact-check his résumé. They failed because their ideology told them not to ask questions. They preferred the fairy tale. But in the real world, when you believe in fairy tales, no wand appears at the end to make the story come true. You are left with failing schools, squandered money and the humiliation of realizing that the man hired to redeem you was simply playing the oldest role in the book – the conman who knew exactly what his audience wanted to hear.

Many qualified Americans, men and women with integrity and actual qualifications, were passed over to fulfill these dimwits' racial justice fantasies. That is the greater crime.
