South Carolina Republican Nancy Mace has been on a bit of a tear lately. Along with pissing off trans activists and baring her soul (and her body) on the House floor about being the victim of rape and sex trafficking, Mace often squares off with Democrat colleagues like Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Sarah McBride of Delaware. Now we can add New Jersey Democrat LaMonica McIver to the list.
On Wednesday afternoon, Mace filed a resolution to expel McIver because of her skirmish with an ICE agent outside of Delaney Hall, an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey. This follows the events of Monday, when U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba filed criminal charges against McIver because of this scuffle. McIver claims she was only doing her job of oversight as a Congress member and that the ICE agents escalated the situation, and feels the charges are politically motivated.
Her Democrat colleagues are standing by her account.
“Members of Congress have a constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of the executive branch wherever and whenever it is needed. We are lawfully permitted to show up at any federal facility unannounced to conduct an inspection on behalf of the American people,” read a statement signed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (Mass.), House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (Calif.), caucus Vice Chair Ted Lieu (Calif.) and Assistant Leader Joe Neguse (Colo.).
The lawmakers added, “By visiting the detention center in Newark, Rep. McIver and two other Members of Congress were upholding their oath of office.”
As my colleague Rusty Weiss reported, Democrats are planning more of this type of "oversight" visits in order to bring attention to illegal aliens they feel are not receiving due process.
Good luck with that.
We’re calling for the expulsion of Rep. LaMonica McIver after she assaulted an ICE agent and interfered with a lawful arrest.
Members of Congress don’t get a free pass to break the law. No one is above the law — not even you, LaMonica.
This was a disgraceful abuse of power. She has no business serving in Congress.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) said Wednesday she is filing a resolution to expel Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) from Congress after the Justice Department charged her with allegedly assaulting law enforcement.
[...]
Driving the news: Mace said in a press release she would introduce an expulsion resolution but let the House Ethics Committee consider it, rather than forcing a House floor vote on it.
The Justice Department has charged McIver with assault on a law enforcement officer based on footage of her elbowing an ICE official outside a migrant detention facility in Newark earlier this month.
McIver has said she was the one who was assaulted and accused the Trump administration of pursuing a political prosecution.
During that Wednesday press conference where Mace announced she'd be filing charges, Mace made reference to the expulsion of former New York Rep. George Santos. Mace said, it "set [a] precedent for expelling Members charged, but not yet convicted, of serious criminal offenses."
Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. Santos was expelled in 2023 after being charged with wire fraud, money laundering, and more than 20 other counts. In April, Santos was sentenced to seven years in prison.
"McIver didn’t just break the law, she attacked the very people who defend it,” Mace said. "Attacking Homeland Security and ICE agents isn’t just disgraceful, it’s assault. If any other American did what she did, they’d be in handcuffs. McIver thinks being a Member of Congress puts her above the law. It doesn’t. She should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Oh, wait, she's a Republican already. Never mind.
