Biden Announces He Will Visit Walter Reed Hospital for a Physical Exam

After President Joe Biden's softball and highly criticized interview with Late Night host Seth Meyers where little mention was made about his cognitive issues, and then his announcement that he will go to the southern border on Thursday—the same date former President Donald J. Trump announced months before, Biden announced on Wednesday that he would be taking a physical exam.

Is that code for "full cognitive workup?" Let's hope so.

President Biden revealed Wednesday that he is making an unannounced trip to Walter Reed Hospital for a physical exam.

Biden has undergone yearly physical examinations since the beginning of his presidency.

Walter Reed Hospital, the standard medical center for all presidents, is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Critics have demanded more transparency from the White House regarding Biden's physical and mental health following the report from Special Counsel Robert Hur that claimed the president had significant memory issues.

The question is, will the White House be transparent about the results of this "physical exam?"

Mr. Biden's last physical showed that the president had a lesion removed from his chest over the previous year, but the results then otherwise largely matched the findings after Mr. Biden's previous exam in November 2021. That report said his occasional coughing was due to acid reflux, while his stiffened gait was the result of spinal arthritis, a previously broken foot and neuropathy in his feet.

Mr. Biden had a colonoscopy in 2021, in which a 3 millimeter "benign-appearing polyp" was identified and removed.

None of this is imbuing confidence in the American people. As my colleague Nick Arama reported, Biden won Michigan, but the deeper numbers are very telling, and not in a good way. Recent polling shows that even Democrats are not convinced that Joe Biden is well enough to continue to pursue reelection.

Many Americans, including Democrats, have expressed reservations about Mr. Biden seeking a second term during this fall's election. Only 37% of Democrats say Mr. Biden should pursue reelection, down from 52% before the 2022 midterm elections, according to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Polls have shown similar reluctance about Trump too, however, and that hasn't stopped either from closing in on their party's nominations.

Stay tuned to the White House afternoon briefing to see if they hold to being transparent about the results of Biden's physical.
