New Report Reveals the Extent to Which Hamas Has Infiltrated UN Agency

Last week, it was revealed that members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) assisted Hamas with its October 7 surprise attack on Israel. Terrorists viciously murdered over 1,000 Israeli soldiers and civilians. Hundreds were kidnapped and kept as hostages.

In response to the news, the United States and several other nations cut or paused funding to the organization. However, a new report provides even more details about the influence of Hamas on the agency, further illustrating the level of corruption among its staff members.

According to the Wall Street Journal, “At least 12 employees of the U.N.’s Palestinian refugee agency had connections to Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel and around 10% of all of its Gaza staff have ties to Islamist militant groups.”

The information in the intelligence reports—based on what an official described as very sensitive signals intelligence as well as cellphone tracking data, interrogations of captured Hamas fighters and documents recovered from dead militants, among other things—were part of a briefing given by Israel to U.S. officials that led Washington and others to suspend aid to Unrwa.

Intelligence estimates shared with the U.S. conclude that around 1,200 of Unrwa’s roughly 12,000 employees in Gaza have links to Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and about half have close relatives who belong to the Islamist militant groups. Both groups have been designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. and others. Hamas has run Gaza since a 2007 coup.

“Unrwa’s problem is not just ‘a few bad apples’ involved in the October 7 massacre,” said a senior Israeli government official. “The institution as a whole is a haven for Hamas’ radical ideology.”

The United States has long been a major financial contributor to the U.N. and its agencies. However, the fact that one of its subsidiaries actively employs terrorists who participated in violent activities against Israel is one of several reasons why there is no reason for America to continue dealing with the entity. As noted above, the U.S. and other countries have cut funding to the UNRWA — at least for the time being.

Those who still support the UNRWA might point to the dilemma of badly needed humanitarian aid for the civilians residing in the Gaza Strip. However, if the agency tasked with ensuring that these folks receive the resources they need is infested with terrorists, it undermines the purpose of the aid while also placing more people in danger. Indeed, some have pointed out that sending aid to the region while Hamas still maintains a hold over the people there is counterproductive since the terrorists will steal any aid that is meant for civilians.

Either way, it is clear that the U.N. and its agencies have become utterly corrupt. This is nothing new; the organization has been plagued by various scandals for decades. It may not happen under the current resident of the White House, but at some point, the U.S. must withdraw its involvement with the U.N. If it chooses to associate with terrorists while constantly condemning Israel for defending itself against said terrorists, it is not an organization worth propping up.
