What’s the Real Purpose Behind Passing the Assault Weapons Ban?

Well, they actually did it. House Democrats managed to pass a bill that would reinstitute the useless and unnecessary assault weapons ban, claiming it will somehow decrease gun violence in America. They were in a rather celebratory mood on social media yesterday, touting it as some kind of major achievement.

However, the Democrats’ celebrations might be short-lived, as the bill will likely fail to pass in the Senate. This legislative proposal, unlike the gun law that passed a few weeks ago, will probably not gain the level of support from Senate Republicans that will allow the anti-gunners to clear the 60-vote threshold.

The Democrats know what little chances they have of getting the bill passed in the Senate. So, why did they even bother with it in the first place? Surely there are other legislative endeavors that would have a better chance of becoming actual law, right?

The reason for this is simple: Democrats understand they are in a precarious situation politically. They need to make it look as if they are trying to implement solutions, especially after the nation has experienced three high-profile mass shootings – one of which occurred at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Also, the surging crime rates are a serious issue for the left, which many have criticized for taking a softer approach to illegal activity. By pushing the assault weapons ban, Democrats seek to create the illusion that they are actually doing something to curb gun violence – and they are banking on the idea that voters will be gullible enough to buy what they are selling.

Even further, they hope to use the bill’s inevitable failure as a cudgel against the Republicans who are going to vote against it. They will likely use a messaging strategy that says, “Look, America! Look at those nasty insensitive Republicans who don’t want to stop mass shootings!”

Democrats and their comrades in the activist media were already using that strategy shortly after each mass shooting, amid calls for more restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.

To put it simply, this is not going to work.

While Americans are concerned about rising crime rates, and polling shows they support additional gun laws, this gambit will fall flat. Despite what the polls say, people have been buying guns at record rates over the past two years, and the trend isn’t slowing down. Most can see that banning supposed “assault weapons” is not going to lower violent crime – especially when we have Democratic officials doing more to protect criminals than civilians.

This will probably be the last piece of anti-gun legislation Democrats will be able to push before the upcoming congressional elections. At this point, they have already gotten as much out of the gun issue as they are going to get in this season. They exploited three mass shootings to demonize those who support gun rights–and even managed to persuade Republican lawmakers to back an anti-gun measure.

But politically, they didn’t get much, all things considered. This is not going to make enough of an impact to sway the outcome of the midterms, which is likely why President Joe Biden has pivoted from messaging about gun control to trying to make it appear as if he and his fellow Democrats want to crack down on crime.

Before being infected with COVID-19, Biden was set to announce a $37 billion budget request to fund law enforcement and crime prevention measures. This “Safer America Plan” would be used to hire and train 100,000 new police officers for “accountable community policing,” clearing court backlogs, solving violent crimes, and creating community task forces to share intelligence. It would also create a $15 billion grant program for states and cities to decrease criminal activity and aid in “identifying non-violent situations that may merit a public health response or other response.”

It’s a significant departure from the “Defund the Police” movement that defined the Democratic Party over the past couple of years. This would likely appeal to voters more than an assault weapons ban, but again, it won’t be enough to make up for the havoc the left caused by demonizing law enforcement and decreasing the number of officers on the street. But what else can they possibly do at this point?
