Democrats have taken a rather bizarre lesson from the results of the California recall election. They seem to believe that a Democratic victory in the bluest state in the Union is somehow a remarkable occurrence and a sign that the rest of the nation is on board with the authoritarian COVID-19 policies they are attempting to shove down the nation’s throat.
The Hill reported:
Democrats are feeling increasingly confident that strict COVID-19 policies are a winning campaign issue in 2022, motivated by a spate of recent polling and California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s triumph this week over a Republican-led effort to recall him from office.
When President Joe Biden announced he would be enacting a sweeping vaccine mandate compelling businesses to require their employees to take the jab, Republicans immediately excoriated him for the overreach and threatened to file lawsuits to prevent it from taking effect. However, it seems Democrats think the American public is on their side, due to the outcome of the recall election.
The Hill also noted that “Democrats say they have the evidence to prove that the public is on their side, fueling a sense of hope within the party as it prepares to defend its razor-thin congressional majorities next year.”
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the 2022 midterms “[are] going to be a referendum on the pandemic” and said she was “encouraged” by the outcome of the California recall election.
During a CBS News interview, Gov. Gavin Newsom told Democrats: “Don’t be timid. Lean in.”
He continued:
“Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about formal authority of setting the tone and tenor on masks — on vaccines and masks. But it’s the moral authority that we have: that we’re on the right side of history and we’re doing the right thing to save people’s lives.”
Most recently, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) stated on Sunday the result of the recall “shows that the American people are sick and tired of the posturing.”
However, what the Democrats are missing is the fact that their COVID-19 agenda isn’t as popular as they would have us believe. A recent poll conducted by the Trafalgar Group showed that 58.6% of voters do not believe President Joe Biden has the authority to issue such sweeping mandates.
Another Trafalgar Group poll found that 71.4% of Americans believed taking the vax should be a matter of “personal choice.”
However, a Quinnipiac poll showed that a slim majority (53 percent) support mandates for government employees. It also revealed that 48 percent support mandates for universities and 45 percent support businesses require their employees to be vaxxed.
Other polls mentioned in The Hill’s report indicate that a slight majority favors Biden’s mask mandate.
The results of polling on vaccine mandates are varied, but it is clear that America is not overwhelmingly in favor of vaccine mandates. California’s recall election was clearly not an indicator that the American people are on board with compulsory vaccination, nor does it indicate that the Democrats’ overall agenda is sitting well with people.
Another study showed that other issues the hard left is pushing are not popular with the populace. These include defunding the police, immigration, Critical Race Theory, and others.
Democrats who believe the California recall election results are propitious are also forgetting – or hoping the public forgets—the monumental ineptitude displayed by the Biden administration. While the left is trying to keep Americans focused on the riot at the U.S. Capitol building, pesky issues like the migrant crisis, inflation, and the Afghanistan withdrawal keep creeping back into the spotlight.
The fact of the matter is that these issues aren’t going away soon. The Democrats’ authoritarian approach to vaccine mandates is not going to win them any new supporters.
It is also worth noting that it is quite easy to explain why the recall effort failed. For starters, Larry Elder was a deeply flawed candidate who had no chance of winning over Californians. Additionally, as stated previously, California is the bluest state in the nation. Democrats outnumber Republicans two to one. The outcome isn’t exactly an outlier. Democrats claiming this is a sign of good things to come for the left are taking the wrong lesson from the recall. But if they wish to delude themselves, who are we to complain?
