On New Year’s Day, the Senate voted to override President Donald Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act. The vote comes days after the House voted for the same measure. It was expected since it was revealed that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was collaborating with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
The vote passed 81 to 13, with the majority of GOP senators supporting the measure. The Wall Street Journal explained:
The National Defense Authorization Act is an annual measure that secures hazard-pay raises for troops and authorizes funds for aircraft, ships, nuclear weapons, and other national-security programs. Mr. Trump had threatened to veto this year’s bill before it passed Congress, but lawmakers had moved forward anyway, approving it with wide majorities.
President Trump had several objections to some of the provisions contained in the legislation. His veto centered mostly on the lack of language repealing Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which provides legal protections to online platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and the fact that it would keep troops overseas for longer. The president wanted to remove 2,500 soldiers from Afghanistan.

President Trump pilloried Republican senators in a blistering tweet posted later on Friday. “Our Republican Senate just missed the opportunity to get rid of Section 230, which gives unlimited power to Big Tech companies. Pathetic!!! Now they want to give people ravaged by the China Virus $600, rather than the $2000 which they so desperately need. Not fair, or smart!” the president wrote.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who voted against the bill, released a statement explaining his vote. He argued that “the bill significantly diminishes our ability to execute military strategies, make expeditious military decisions directly related to our national security interests, and wind down endless wars by interfering with the President’s Article II authority.”
