Well, it looks like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) got what they wanted. On Friday, the Senate voted to override President Donald Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The Washington Examiner noted that the vote “provided more than the two-thirds needed to force the NDAA into law over Trump’s objection.”

The Examiner continued:

The critical defense and policy bill sets 2021 spending levels at $740 billion and provides important directives to the Defense Department for the coming years. It also includes a significant of infusion of funding for cyber security, which lawmakers touted in the wake of a recent and massive cyber hack by the Chinese.

Armed Services Committee Chairman James Inhofe lauded the vote, saying, This is really a significant vote.” He continued, “This year, especially so. Show the American people that Republicans and Democrats can work together.”

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said: “This legislation is essential to the security of the United States and to the welfare of the troops who defend us every day.”

President Trump has vetoed nine bills during his tenure in the White House. The 2021 NDAA was the first to be overridden.

Earlier this week, the House voted to override Trump’s veto.

The Associated Press reported:

Besides his concerns about social media and military base names, Trump also said the defense bill restricted his ability to conduct foreign policy, ‘particularly my efforts to bring our troops home.’ Trump was referring to provisions in the bill that impose conditions on his plan to withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan and Germany. The measures require the Pentagon to submit reports certifying that the proposed withdrawals would not jeopardize U.S. national security.
