The inmates have taken control of the asylum.

Late on Tuesday night, hundreds of protestors entered Seattle City Hall. It is believed that City Councilmember Kshama Sawant, who has a key to the building, opened it up for them.

Sawant called her colleagues “sellouts” and “corporate politicians.”

Last week, Sawant issued a statement which said the mayor has:

Repeatedly unleashed Seattle police to use ever-escalating violence against ordinary people protesting the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many other black and brown people.

The police have inflicted tear gas, mace, rubber bullets, flash-bang grenades, curfews, arrests and other repressive tactics on Seattle activists and residents — including children — in an attempt to bully and silence the protest movement.

Q13 Fox reports:

People marched from Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood where Sawant held an event at Cal Anderson Park.

The protesters made their way into city hall and speakers were demanding change. They were heard calling for the resignation of Mayor Jenny Durkan.

Others held signs saying “Tax Amazon.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County filed a lawsuit against the Seattle Police Department over the “violent tactics it has used to break up largely peaceful protests in recent days.”

According to Q13 Fox,

Officers have used tear gas, pepper spray and other less-lethal weapons against crowds that have demonstrated against racism and police brutality. The city attorney’s office said it is reviewing the complaint.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and Police Chief Carmen Best have apologized to peaceful protesters who were subjected to chemical weapons. They promised a ban on using one type of tear gas, but officers used it again.

My colleague, Nick Arama, reported on Tuesday evening that militant leftists had taken over several blocks in the city, establishing what they call the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” or the “Capitol Hill Free Zone.” This story can be viewed here.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
