Water Cooler- April 17, 2018: The Bizarre World of the Culture Wars

Welcome to Tuesday’s Water Cooler dedicated weekly to the culture wars here and abroad.  This week, I present the seven best, or worst depending on one’s perspective, events that may or may not have made the news.  The “Celebrity of the Week” feature is taking a week off.  This week’s edition has a somewhat international flavor.

HERE’S TO INGENUITY, AUSSIE STYLE

In perhaps one of the biggest “Ooops” in Internet scam history, it was revealed that the most popular Black Lives Matter Facebook page with over 700,000 followers was run by a very white Australian, Ian Mackay.  That is double the number of followers of the official BLM Facebook page.  Donations poured in to the tune of $100,000. Although one has to salute his entrepreneurial originality, it also proves what a scam the whole movement is after all.

SPEAKING OF FACEBOOK AND GERMANY

German historian Michael Hesseman was recently banned from Facebook for making the historically accurate statement that Islam was not a part of Germany.  Others, like Angela Merkel, have adopted the mantra that “Islam belongs to Germany,” even though Germany has always been a decidedly Christian country.

In other German news, the headmistress of a school in Frankfurt suggested that a young girl bullied by Muslim students can avoid the bullying simply by donning a hijab.  And, a Turkish man recently avoided a jail sentence for rape after the court determined the assault was not culturally considered rape under Islam.

THE SCARIEST NEWS THIS WEEK

A recent poll found that 22% of millennials- that group, we are told, are our future leaders- were unaware or were unsure if they ever heard of the Holocaust.  No doubt, they also believe that America invented slavery and that Native Americans were slaughtered in the worst genocide the world has ever known.

WE AREN’T THE ONLY NATION WITH AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT PROBLEM, BUT TRUMP’S WALL MAY BE A BETTER SOLUTION

While we wring our hands here in the United States over the fate of 800,000 DACA people and debate a wall and deployment of the National Guard to the border, it appears that the African nation of Botswana has another idea on how to deal with illegal immigrants to their country.  Of course, this begs the question as to why anyone would want to immigrate to Botswana.  The reason is simple: although not exactly a beacon for immigrants, it apparently beats living in neighboring Zimbabwe.

Any way, to deal with the problem of immigrants crossing the border looking for jobs Botswana natives won’t do, the host country’s police and border patrol people have taken to physically beating people.  Gee…why didn’t Trump think of this? It’s much cheaper than a wall.

RUSSIA MAY GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME

It is one thing to interfere in elections and a whole other thing to kill British citizens on British soil, but Russia may have gone way too far now.  Led by Senator Aleksey Pushkov, a close ally of Satan (a/k/a Putin), he recently suggested that both Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Theresa May have a problem with alcohol.

He said the monarch treats drinking “like a ceremony” and that she drinks gin, followed by wine and then ends her day with champagne.  As for May, her problem is with bourbon.

This creates a whole new dynamic in geopolitics.  You mess with Russian diplomats and expel them, they’ll accuse your leaders of alcoholism.

THE MOST HOMOPHOBIC NATION ON EARTH?

Well, technically it is not a nation, but a part of the Russian Federation.  I refer, of course, to that Islamic enclave known as Chechnya which is ruled over by the brutal Ramzan Kadyrov.  According to reports, gay people are regularly subjected to beatings and torture.  Of course, Kadyrov denies this by saying that there are no gay people in Chechnya, so there is no one to beat up.  He further said that if there were such people, “their own families would send them to a place from which they would never return.”

Geez…and people complain about Vice President Pence?

INSIDIOUS VIDEO GAMES

A Seattle University professor recently penned a book called The Toxic Meritocracy of Video Games: Why Gaming Culture Is the Worst.  This has nothing to do with supposed sexism, misogyny, or large-breasted female heroines perpetuating an oppressive patriarchy on an unsuspecting generation of video game-playing people.

The author, Christopher Paul, who teaches classes on communications, gender issues and video games, argues that games value skill, technique and hard work.  These three devious values- which he labels “meritocracy-” in turn fuel the “deep bred misogyny of Gamergate” and other “sexist industry practices.”

So if you’ve mastered the top levels of some video game through skill, technique and hard work, you may just be a sexist misogynist.  Personally, I think it all started with those two little Italian dudes, Mario and Luigi.

That’s it for this week.  Hope to see you next week for another Water Cooler edition of… The Culture Wars.
