Today Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado released an ad that makes clear that he is no fan of Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. Coffman is the first House Republican to use an explicitly anti-Donald Trump message in paid advertising. Watch the ad:
People ask me, “What do you think about Trump?”
Honestly, I don’t care for him much and I certainly don’t trust Hillary.
I’m a Marine. For me, country comes first. My duty is always to you.
So if Donald Trump is president, I’ll stand up to him, plain and simple.
And if Hillary wins, I’ll hold her accountable every step of the way.
The commercial will begin airing on Friday.
Congressman Coffman represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District — a suburban Denver district that is one of the most politically competitive in the country. Political handicappers say the race is a toss-up.
Liesl Hickey, a former National Republican Congressional Committee executive director who also advises Coffman, has written a three-page memo to vulnerable GOP candidates titled “How to Survive in 2016.” The memo tells candidates they can gain the support of swing voters by carefully attacking on Trump and Hillary. Hickey co-produced the Coffman commercial along with Chad Scarborough.
