Senator Ben Sasse Stays #NeverTrump

In the midst of conservative heroes saying they’ll stand beside the Republican nominee, even if that nominee is Donald Trump, one politician is planting his feet firmly and saying no.

Nebraska Senator, Ben Sasse, is refusing to vote for Trump or Clinton. Saying he and his wife “decided to sit down in October and deliberate, pray and think” on the issue, Sasse declared that while he will be casting a vote in November, it won’t be for either of the current frontrunners.

“People, perhaps 10 to 1, are saying thanks for saying what we believe,” he said, after speaking with his constituents in multiple town halls. According to Sasse, many Nebraskans share his views on staying away from helping Trump into office.

As it stands, he is currently the only Republican senator declared to do so.

Sasse recently spoke to 400 high schoolers during the opening of this year’s Boy’s State. The question popped up during an interview he gave afterward.

He was asked, however, if he could see himself voting for Gary Johnson, and the Libertarian party. Sasse said he hadn’t really put too much thought into it as he hasn’t looked too closely into it yet, but said that the Libertarian Party is something he would definitely consider in the long term.

This fits with what he had told the students about what the political atmosphere may look like when they become voters.

“Don’t be so sure the two-party political system continues long-term,” he said. “Both parties are exhausted. They probably don’t have the big ideas for the change that is coming.”

Sasse is correct. When the best both parties can offer us are the most unlikable, and disapproved of candidates to ever run for office in recent memory, it’s time to invite more parties to the table. A consolidation of power into two parties hardly liked anymore is no way to run a country, and Sasse’s forward thinking on the matter may hold the answer to our problem.
