In a bold move to bolster North American security, President Donald Trump announced plans for a $175 billion missile defense system, dubbed the "Golden Dome," during a press conference in the Oval Office on Tuesday. The ambitious project, set to be fully operational by the end of Trump’s term in 2029, aims to create a state-of-the-art shield capable of intercepting a wide range of missile threats, from ballistic and hypersonic missiles to drones, whether launched from land or space. The system will not only protect the United States but also extend coverage to Canada, marking a significant step toward regional security cooperation.

“Canada has called us, and they want to be part of it,” Trump said, highlighting the collaborative nature of the project. “They want to have protection also, so as usual, we help Canada, do the best we can.” This inclusion of Canada underscores the system’s potential to strengthen North American defense unity against global threats.

The "Golden Dome" draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome, which successfully defended against Iranian missile attacks in April 2024. However, Trump’s vision is far more expansive, aiming to counter sophisticated threats from nations like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Unlike the U.S.’s current Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, which is limited in scope, the Golden Dome is designed to handle large-scale attacks, offering a robust “umbrella of protection” for the homeland, according to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the technological advancements that make this project feasible. “President Reagan, 40 years ago, cast the vision for it; the technology wasn’t there. Now it is and you're following through,” Hegseth said, referring to former President Ronald Reagan’s unrealized “Star Wars” missile defense vision from the 1980s. “We will protect the homeland from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, whether they're conventional or nuclear.” This technological leap is seen as a game-changer for national security, addressing vulnerabilities that have grown with the proliferation of advanced missile systems worldwide.

The project, led by Gen. Michael Guetlein, the Pentagon’s vice chief of space operations, will involve the nation’s top minds and cutting-edge innovations. The Defense Department is prioritizing modernization by phasing out outdated systems and streamlining resources to ensure the Golden Dome is a “generational investment in the security of America and Americans,” Hegseth noted. While specific details about the system’s coverage and scale remain under wraps, its development is expected to create thousands of high-tech jobs across the U.S., as the entire system will be manufactured domestically.

The Golden Dome represents a significant evolution in U.S. defense strategy, echoing Trump’s campaign promises to prioritize homeland security. "We will have the best system ever built,” Trump said, emphasizing its role in safeguarding North America from emerging global threats. As geopolitical tensions rise, the system could serve as a critical deterrent, ensuring the safety of millions across the continent.

While questions remain about the project’s scope and timeline, the announcement signals a renewed commitment to protecting North America in an increasingly volatile world. With Canada’s involvement and a focus on cutting-edge technology, the Golden Dome could redefine regional security for decades to come.
