On Sunday night, with the government shutdown hitting its 42nd day, eight Senate Democrats finally delivered the votes to advance a package to end it. The deal will now go before the House, where it's expected to pass.
What did Democrats get for holding out this long? Absolutely nothing. In fact, this deal was on the table weeks ago, with its only concession being a vote on Obamacare subsidies in December. But while Senate Republicans had been offering that from the beginning, refusing to negotiate the matter while the government was shut down, House Speaker Mike Johnson has already clarified that he's not even bound to follow suit in his chamber.

Naturally, the failure theater has already started, with Senate Democrats lining up to proclaim they voted no and will "keep fighting," knowing all the while this whole thing was orchestrated.
This is all theater.

They all want this deal to go through, but none of them want to own it. So a few Democrats will take the fall while they virtue signal. pic.twitter.com/wyPW3JwX7y
There's a reason only the exact number of Democrats needed to advance the deal was mustered. These were the fall guys who needed to get this out of the way to avoid damage in their own states. Meanwhile, other Democrats can pound their chests and pretend they didn't want this deal to go through, but don't kid yourself, many of them wanted this off-ramp. We were just days away from the national airspace and commercial air travel completely collapsing, and continuing to mumble about Obamacare subsidies for earlier retirees wasn't going to work any longer.
There's no question that Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who also voted no and bragged about it, let this deal go through. He could have shut this down, but didn't, and that has the delusional far left of his party roiling with rage. Rep. Ro Khanna, one of the top Democrats in the House, is now calling for Schumer's head.
Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?
— Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) November 10, 2025
It shouldn't be underestimated how big a deal that is. Not even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had the guts to make that direct call, though she'll likely follow suit now. Khanna chairs a committee in the House and co-chairs another one. He's not a backbencher, and to go right at the most powerful Democrat in Congress, calling him ineffective and demanding he be replaced, is a new level of discontent within the Democratic Party.
No one has the high ground here, though. Democrats have been claiming for the entirety of the government shutdown that they didn't want it and that Republicans caused it. Now that it's ending, they are screaming bloody murder. All of their messaging is completely incoherent and self-defeating. But I don't think any Republican will complain about the infighting that is already beginning. A fight for the soul of the Democratic Party is kicking off. Is it Ocasio-Cortez, Khanna, and Zohran Mamdani who win or Schumer and Maggie Hassan? I know where my money is.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
