Jasmine Crockett Knifes Chuck Schumer in the Back, As Democrat Infighting Explodes

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), who is desperately trying to become the new face of the Democratic Party, has discovered a new way of garnering attention: Stabbing Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the back.

In case you've missed it, the Democratic Party is currently in the midst of an identity crisis, and the radicals are winning. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) are holding "fight oligarchy" rallies around the country while figures like Schumer are trying to thread the needle between radicalism and moderation. To put it succinctly, his attempt isn't going very well.

Pressure on Schumer to step down began after he voted for a Trump-backed continuing resolution in early March. The minority leader recognized that Democrats had no hand to play that it would have actually helped Trump to shut down the government, but that's irrelevant to the Crocketts and Ocasio-Cortezs of the world. That wing of the Democratic Party, which may be a majority at this point, wants to "fight," even if their method of fighting is deeply unpopular with normal Americans.

That means the long knives are out

"I've talked to some donors that are trying to get very creative, but I think that it is a little bit reminiscent of what we saw happen when Joe Biden was taken down," Crockett said on CBS News Texas on Friday. "There were a lot of elected members of Congress that decided that they wanted to play in that conversation. So it’ll be interesting to see how many senators decide that they want to start engaging in that conversation."

Yes, it sure would be "interesting," wouldn't it? Typically, House members stay out of the leadership battles of the other chamber, but Crockett knows nothing of typicality. She wants her star to rise, no doubt to prep for a 2028 presidential run, and before you scoff, consider how hard she has been hitting the media circuit lately. It seems obvious to me that she's got higher ambitions than a back-benching House member, and there's no path to her becoming a senator in Texas.

I don't think people quite appreciate just yet how insane 2028 is going to be, and how many people will think they have an opening. I'd bet my house that Ocasio-Cortez is going to run. Then you've got Kamala Harris, who will certainly run it back. Gavin Newsom has become a podcast host to prep his entry into the race. Throw in Pete Buttigieg and Tim Walz, and you've got the makings of one of the funniest primaries of all time. Crockett has every reason to join the fray, and she's not rushing to build her profile for no reason.

Returning to Schumer, it's really tough to kick a minority leader out of their position. Conference members talk a big game, but when push comes to shove, they usually fall in line. Republicans can vouch for that given Sen. Mitch McConnell's staying power when he held the role. This feels different, though. The Democratic Party isn't looking to moderate after their 2024 losses, and the more exposure Crockett and the like get, the more influence they will gain. The fact that she's even willing to publicly take that shot at Schumer, comparing him to Joe Biden, shows the dynamic has changed.

If this is the direction the Democratic Party is heading, and the DNC electing David Hogg as vice chair says it is, I don't think it's going to work out too well. Most Americans are still generally sane when it comes to politics, and Crockett, Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders, etc. are the antithesis of that. The radicals could be leading their party to total destruction, and I'm just fine with that.
