The 'Showdown' That Wasn't: Trump and Xi Put on the Full Charm Offensive at Luxe State Dinner

President Donald Trump continues his state visit to China, and as RedState’s Nick Arama reported Thursday, the trip appears to be going very well as Chinese President Xi Jinping rolled out the red carpet for the U.S. delegation. More importantly, the two leaders have come to agreement on a number of issues, from increasing Chinese investment into our industries to stopping the flow of fentanyl precursors to cooperating on keeping open the Strait of Hormuz. Crucially, as Arama wrote, “Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.”

With the serious meetings out of the way for the moment, it was time for a luxe state dinner:

Once the festivities got underway, Trump toasted his Chinese counterpart:

"From the beginning, our citizens have shared a deep sense of mutual respect. Founding Father Benjamin Franklin published The Sayings of Confucius in his colonial newspaper and today a sculpture recognizing that ancient Chinese sage is carved into the face of the United States Supreme Court very proudly," Trump said.

He continued to tout the two countries' ties, highlighting Chinese immigrants' labor on U.S. railroads and the modern day Chinese population's love of American exports like basketball and blue jeans.

"Chinese restaurants in America today outnumber the five largest fast food chains in the United States all combined. And that's a pretty big statement," Trump continued.

Trump also used the opportunity to invite Xi and his wife Madam Peng to visit the White House on September 24.

Xi, meanwhile, had a toast of his own:

He stressed the importance of Sino‑American relations and noted that between us, we have 1.7 billion people.

"Both China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals. President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations and bring more peace, prosperity and progress to the world," Xi said…

China-U.S. relations concern the well-being of the over 1.7 billion people of both countries and affect the interests of the over 8 billion people of the world. Both sides should rise up to this historic responsibility and steer the giant ship of China-U.S. relations forward steadily and in the right direction."

So far, the “showdown” has been remarkably friendly, especially considering that China is our top competitor and often working at cross-purposes to our interests. The Taiwan question, in particular, remains a thorny issue. Meanwhile, it seems that not a day goes by that we don’t uncover a CCP spy in our midst. The competition will undoubtedly continue, and the suspicions both countries hold against each other won't suddenly magically disappear, but for one night at least, it was all chummy and congratulatory.
