Most people at the pool never saw it happen.

A six-year-old boy had drifted motionless in the water at a community pool in Pasco County, Florida. Families were enjoying a Saturday morning. Children were swimming. Adults were talking nearby.

Then Gregory Simmonds noticed the boy.

Surveillance video released shows the off-duty ICE officer dive into the pool fully clothed, reach the child, and pull him from the water.

After carrying the boy to the pool deck, Simmonds immediately began CPR.

A 6-year-old boy was found floating unconscious in a Florida pool. Seconds later, an ICE officer jumped in to save him.

ICE law enforcement officer Gregory Simmonds spotted the child in distress in Pasco County on May 16 and immediately pulled him from the water.

The child wasn't breathing, and Simmonds began life-saving CPR at the scene until the boy regained consciousness.

Local authorities say the child is expected to make a full recovery, a rescue DHS is calling an act of bravery.

The video shows people gathering around as Simmonds works on the child. A few moments later, the boy begins responding.

Local authorities say he is expected to make a full recovery.

Simmonds serves with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Tampa. He was off duty when the incident happened on May 16.

Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis praised his actions in a statement released this week.

"This officer swiftly sprung to action and delivered life-saving medical care to this 6-year-old who drowned," Bis said. "Our agents truly are the best of the best. They put their lives on the line to arrest the worst of the worst. Instead of demonizing ICE law enforcement, sanctuary politicians should be thanking them for removing criminals from their communities."

Pasco County Sheriff's Office Corporal J. Leathers said Simmonds' actions saved the child's life.

"Due to his quick thinking, decisive actions and willingness to place himself into action during a critical incident, the child survived and is expected to make a full recovery," Leathers said. "His actions directly contributed to saving the life of the child and reflect exceptional courage and selflessness."

The footage lasts less than a minute.

One moment, the boy is floating alone in the pool. The next moment, Simmonds is carrying him to safety.

According to DHS, this is not the first time ICE personnel have been credited with helping save a child this year. In March, an ICE officer assisting TSA operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport helped a one-year-old suffering a medical emergency. In February, off-duty ICE agents in Minnesota performed CPR on a four-year-old who had been pulled from a hotel swimming pool. Both children survived.

For the family in Pasco County, the outcome was the same.

A six-year-old boy went home.

And a summer day that could have ended in tragedy ended with a child getting a second chance.
