When the internet came along, the consensus was that it was something that could be used for both good and bad. That has definitely proven true. Now, the world is entering the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It too will be something that will have the ability to be a blessing and a curse. One of the areas in which AI may truly be able to change lives is in the healthcare industry.

A new study found that the global market of AI in healthcare is expected to skyrocket by 2034. The study was conducted by The Insight Partners. Their research is based largely on interviews with C-suite executives, equipment manufacturer engineers, procurement heads, and policy analysts from over 15 countries. Also included in the research is information from databases and third-party sources.

In 2025, the AI healthcare market was valued at around $39.5 billion. By 2034, that number is expected to reach $1 trillion. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for 2025 to 2034 is expected to reach 45.3 percent. Samir Kendale is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. In a statement, he also talked about the possibilities of AI in healthcare, saying:

“When we talk about the application of AI, we can think of applying it across the entire spectrum of health care specialties, from the administrative side through to clinical care.”

Much of the focus has been on AI tools easing a portion of administrative tasks, but several analysts have said that one of the most critical areas where AI could have the biggest potential is improving care for cancer patients by improving detection methods, analyzing data, and assisting in diagnosis. The study comes on the heels of AI being increasingly a part of American healthcare. A 2024 Harvard Medical School study confirmed that the use of AI can be instrumental in making routine tasks more efficient, increasing operational efficiency that will aid in diagnosis, and even make the discovery of new medical treatments faster.

The study found that North America will account for over 42.92 percent of the global AI market by that 2034 date. Europe holds the next largest share at 26.83 percent and is expected to grow 44.3 percent through 2034. But aside from the numbers, at the end of the day, what does AI mean for patients? As someone who suffers from a chronic condition, spinal stenosis, which at times is excruciatingly painful, does it mean new and improved treatments for pain? How can it help the afore-mentioned cancer patients? Elon Musk's Neurolink may one day help people who are paralyzed to walk again. The possibilities really do seem endless.

AI is like many things: Just because you can doesn't mean you should. But also, like many things, in the right hands, AI could be amazing.
