What Is the Latest Buffoonery in Minnesota? The Battle of the Flags

The ongoing story of the rampant fraud in Minnesota, and the distinct possibility that Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison knew full well what was going on, has been front and center since independent journalist Nick Shirley helped amplify reporting on the scandal with his viral videos. Democrats have been mad as hornets that their pandering to a vital voting bloc by looking the other way has been exposed. So mad that they have come up with a silly and petty new way to punish those who will not join in and play along.

On Monday, the Minnesota House of Representatives introduced legislation that would punish cities and counties for not flying the recently redesigned state flag. Unsurprisingly, it was members of Minnesota's Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) party that introduced the bill. It would decrease the amount of state aid a city or county could receive that "flies or otherwise makes use of a state flag other than the design of the state flag as certified in the report of the State Emblems Redesign Commission." If passed, the legislation would go into effect in 2027.

The new flag was adopted in 2023 at the height of wokeness because the original flag, adopted in 1893, was, of course, deemed racist to Native Americans. But since then, several cities have returned to flying the original flag. On the same day Democrats introduced the bill, in a gutsy display, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted to join the cities of Elk River, Champlin, Zumbrota, and Plainview in flying the original flag.

Why is the old flag racist? The Associated Press at the time described it this way:

"The seal depicts a Native American riding off into the sunset while a White settler plows his field with his rifle leaning on a nearby stump. The imagery suggests to many that the Indigenous people were defeated and going away, while Whites won and were staying."

That description seems like a whole lot of woke pretzel-twisting.

The new and "improved" flag description, according to the State Emblems Redesign Commission, has an eight-pointed star against a navy blue background that apparently is supposed to resemble the shape of the state. That is next to a solid light-blue field, which is supposed to represent the state's waters. Critics of the new flag say that not only is it just a bad replacement, but it also bears a striking resemblance to the Somali national flag. Coincidence?

The scope of the amount of fraud and abuse in Minnesota has been nothing short of stunning. Roughly $9 billion of fraud was uncovered in Minnesota. Approximately 90 percent of those charged with fraud are of Somali descent. But for Minnesota Democrats, it's all about power and pandering. The Somalis are a vital voting bloc for Democrats and donate heavily to Democrat politicians, and more specifically, to Somali Democrat politicians.

Inver Grove Heights and Elk River are suburbs of St. Paul and Minneapolis, respectively. But for smaller communities like the others mentioned above, that have populations less than 25,000, the lack of state aid could affect services like police and fire departments. Republican Speaker of the Minnesota House, Lisa Demuth, called out Democrats' skewed priorities, saying,

"That bill is dead on arrival. There is no way this bill is moving through. To know that Democrats are trying to take funding away from our police and fire, from our cities, it's ridiculous. We have real work that could help Minnesotans."
