No More Free Rides: MN Rep. Tom Emmer Calls Out Somali Ties to Massive Fraud

The situation in Minnesota is growing more interesting almost by the minute. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison have to be suffering from some forehead sweats right now, with the Trump administration yanking federal funding until the entire "suitcases of American currency being hauled to Somalia from daycare centers with no kids and meal centers that serve no meals" thing is sorted out.

Now, Republican Representative Tom Emmer (MN-06), who is also the House Majority Whip, is piling on, calling for Somali immigrants involved to be sent back to Somalia - even if it requires revoking their citizenship.

Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer on Monday called for every Somali Minnesotan who committed fraud to be deported, including those who are U.S. citizens.

In social media posts and a news release titled “Send them home,” Emmer said those here illegally should be deported immediately. And he said naturalized citizens should have their U.S. citizenship revoked — even if that would require changing the law.

"Our nation will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture,” Emmer stated.

He also said any naturalized Somali American citizens who had undisclosed ties to terrorist organizations or committed marriage fraud during the immigration process should lose their citizenship.

That honestly doesn't seem like an excessively harsh response. These are people who are suspected of taking millions, possibly billions of American taxpayers' money by fraud, with much of it going back to Somalia.

A press release from Rep. Emmer's office states:

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) is calling for the denaturalization of Somalis convicted of defrauding American taxpayers. Whip Emmer’s call comes after the Assistant U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, Joe Thompson, estimated that $9 billion has been stolen through fraud in Minnesota. Roughly 90% of the individuals charged with fraud in Minnesota are of Somali descent.

Rep. Emmer said, per the release, “I have three words regarding Somalis who have committed fraud against American taxpayers: Send them home. If they’re here illegally, deport them immediately; if they’re naturalized citizens, revoke their citizenship and deport them quickly thereafter. If we need to change the law to do that, I will. Our nation will not tolerate those who take advantage of our charity and refuse to assimilate into our culture. Additionally, if any naturalized Somalis had undisclosed ties to terrorist organizations like Al-Shabaab, I want to see their citizenship revoked and their asses sent back immediately. Same goes for anyone who is found to have committed marriage fraud during the immigration process.”

That's strong stuff, but it's warranted. The evidence is mounting, day by day, that there was a massive, organized fraud operation going on, and that has to be answered. And if that "marriage fraud" line isn't a scarcely-concealed jab at Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-05), then there's no such beast.

Rep. Emmer has been criticized for statements he made about Somali and other African immigrants in the past, including calling them “some of the fastest-assimilating populations that we've had.” His district, Minnesota District 6, overlaps the Minneapolis Somali/East African community. But, as the saying goes, that was then, this is now, and clearly, Rep. Emmer can look at new evidence and adjust his views accordingly.

Whatever he may have said in the past, he is spot-on now. Any of these people who are in the country should be sent back to Somalia immediately. Any who are somehow here legally, if we have to go through the process of revoking visas or even denaturalizing, we should do that as well.

Representative Emmer is right. Send them back. Everyone who was involved, everyone who knew about it. Send them back.
