White House Blasts Dems 'Reckless' DHS Shutdown As TSA Lines Get Longer

The White House is calling out Democrats for their latest temper tantrum disguised as refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which, in turn, is leaving thousands of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees without a paycheck for the third time in six months. In February, Democrats refused to support funding for DHS unless changes were made regarding immigration enforcement after two people were shot and killed in Minneapolis during Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations there. Among Democrats' demands for funding DHS was prohibiting ICE agents from wearing masks, requiring agents to wear body cameras, and obtaining warrants before entering homes.

On Monday, the White House website featured comments from travelers nationwide about their experiences due to the Democrats' refusal to fund DHS. At Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas, one man stated, “There’s been a lot of frustration. A lot of people are very upset." In New Orleans, where TSA lines stretched into the parking garage, another traveler said, “This is ridiculous. This is crazy. We get here, we go through Customs — and it’s so packed in here, you can’t even find the direction they’re trying to give."

At Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, long TSA lines are also causing ground delays. A traveler there stated, “It’s the longest I’ve ever seen it. I’ve flown into Atlanta several times, and this is by far the longest I’ve ever seen it in my life.” TSA agents have had enough of Democrats' grandstanding as well. One agent in Phoenix bluntly stated, “We’re fed up. We’ve had enough. This is the third shutdown in a matter of six months.”

Democrats' refusal to move on funding for DHS comes at a time when heightened security is a must for travelers amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Also, on Monday, it was reported that U.S. intelligence had intercepted encrypted communications, possibly originating in Iran, that may have been triggers for "sleeper assets" outside the country. Add to that the fact that thousands of college students are gearing up for spring break season and will be traveling from all parts of the country.

The White House did not hold back, placing blame on airport security issues squarely on the backs of Democrats, citing the fact that they had negotiated a bipartisan funding bill for the year, but "walked away from the table, choosing illegal aliens over public safety and forcing these essential workers to serve without pay yet again." DHS funding not only affects the TSA, but it also affects agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Coast Guard, essentially putting national security and the ability to respond to any emergencies or natural disasters in jeopardy.

It is unclear whether the departure of now former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will push Democrats to make a deal. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) called it a "major step" that should "move negotiations closer to a deal."

But until then, if you are standing in line, thank a Democrat.
