Pamela Anderson Ages Gracefully, and the Internet Informs Her That Women Are Not Allowed to Do That

American culture is an odd thing. It often tells us that we should be doing something, but on the other hand, tells us we should do everything possible to avoid doing just that thing. The one thing none of us can avoid is aging. Sooner or later, it catches up to everyone. It's up to us, through our life choices, genetics, and maybe a few other things, as to how we deal with it.

If you make a living in Hollywood, there is a whole different set of rules to deal with aging. And if you are a woman, well, be prepared to do the impossible or else.

Pamela Anderson recently discovered the stringent requirements on women who dare to get older and their appearance requirements. Earlier this week, Anderson appeared at the Met Gala in New York City. At 57 years old, she is a bit removed from her "Baywatch" days. She showed up in an elegant gown, shorter hair, and no makeup. While she did receive a few comments about aging gracefully, other "fashion mavens" on X were not as kind.

A now-deleted Daily Mail post on X described her as "frumpy." Many people did not think the short hair and even shorter bangs were flattering, but there were comments about her appearing "washed up," another referred to "the wall," a supposed point where women lose their 20-something looks and are somehow not as valuable. The whole Neanderthal-ish comment read, "Men hit the wall and become stronger, healthier, and happier. Women hit the wall and become depressed. Men grow by challenge. Women don't."

Hollywood standards aside, why is it that women are held to impossible appearance standards but not men? When men go gray, they look "distinguished," but when women decide to rock those grays, distinguished is usually not the first word used. As someone on X commented, "Nobody got mad when George Clooney let his beard go gray."

But Pamela Anderson also got a lot of praise for bucking the societal, and more specifically, Hollywood rat race of being in your 50s and being expected to look like you are still in your 30s. Women loved her clean, natural look. The consensus being, if Pam can do it, we can too. Pamela Anderson decided to escape Hollywood and the artificial fountains of youth that seem to go with it just in time. In 2020, she returned to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where she grew up, saying that "I was not in a good space..." She also lived in France for two years. Now, she lives a simple life, gardening and has written two books, and is filming a "Naked Gun" reboot.

But for all the negative comments she received, Pamela Anderson has also gotten a lot of praise, praise for ditching the hair and makeup squad, breast implants, and Botox injections, and just for embracing age. She will be spared the facelift lines so many Hollywood women end up with as they chase eternal youth.

So many people go to Hollywood to be rebels or trendsetters, not people with 9-5 lives. Pamela Anderson is giving that a whole new meaning and reminding everyone that beauty comes in many forms.
