Anti-Gun Activist David Hogg to Run for DNC Vice Chair

With their bench being anything but deep and having lost several key constituencies in the 2024 presidential election, Democrats may be on the verge of gaining one more player for their bench, one who could be able to bring at least one of those constituencies back into the fold. On Monday, gun control advocate David Hogg announced he intends to run for Vice Chair of the Democrat National Committee (DNC).

Hogg gained notoriety in 2018 after he survived a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He has been an outspoken advocate for gun control since then. Hogg said his focus should he win the position would be to lure young people who deserted the Democrat Party in 2024 back. This year's election was not a good one for Democrats' outreach to young voters, with Donald Trump and Republicans gaining the largest share of voters under 30 than any GOP candidate since 2008. Hogg thinks he can change that.

But for Democrats, Hogg may be a double-edged sword. On Democrats connecting with young voters again, Hogg stated:

“Moving forward, we must have a renewed focus on our youth outreach in all states and territories to rebuild our coalition after the massive shift to the right among young voters this election."

However, it was his criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign and the suggestion that Democrats take a few moments of self-reflection that might not get him on the good side of Democrat Party bigwigs. Hogg had this to say about the Harris campaign and Democrats' seemingly cavalier attitude about their loss to Donald Trump.

"You raised an absurd amount of money. This was our race to lose, and we lost it. And it's time to really peel back the curtain and say, 'Okay, what did we do wrong?' Instead of just protecting the consultants that brought us into this place in the first place."

But Democrats might not be able to ignore Hogg's efforts to get his foot in the door of DNC leadership. He has emailed all 448 members who would vote and scheduled follow-up discussions with them. Hogg said he called out what he felt was the party's "lack of awareness" before the election and also why they were not focusing on reaching out specifically to young men and stated:

"I got messages from different consultants saying, 'Here you go, saying this stupid stuff again.' As if they know what young people are thinking, when it's emblematic of the broader problem at hand for the Democratic Party, where we would rather choose to live in a consultant-curated fictional reality."

But actually, one might rightly question if David Hogg knows what young people are thinking. In an AP VoteCast survey of voters aged 18-29, jobs and the economy were the number one issues for 40 percent of those voters, followed by abortion. Gun policy came in a number seven.

While Americans on both sides of the aisle might agree that politics needs young people to get into politics and bring fresh ideas with them, it does help if those young people actually know what they are talking about. In February of 2023, Hogg took to Twitter, now X, and posited this gem:

"After reading about the history of the second amend and talking with a lot of hist & law professors- I believe the second amendment has been intentionally misinterpreted. It was never meant as an individual right it was created to protect state militias like the national guard," "It says well regulated militia for a reason. The ‘shall not be infringed’ part means the federal government is not allowed to forcibly disarm state militias. I’m not alone in this interpretation. Over 100 years of jurisprudence back me up on this."

Needless to say, he was hammered by people who did know what they were talking about. Hogg's other "venture" came in February of 2021, when he announced he was launching the progressive-owned "Good Pillow, LLC" with co-founder William LeGate to compete with conservative Mike Lindell's "My Pillow" franchise. By April, Hogg was pulling out and released any ownership in the company and stated he was "going back to activism." Probably a good idea.

Hogg will be running for the DNC Vice Chair slot against Minnesota party chair and DNC vice chair Ken Martin, Wisconsin party chair Ben Wickler, former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, and New York state Sen. James Skoufis. The DNC will vote on February 1. If he wins, Hogg may become the gift that keeps on giving for Republicans.
