These days, harassment isn't hard to commit. One quick ticket to Tormenter Town may await in a lavatory line. Such is illustrated by a story out of Illinois.
The Waterloo Community Unit School District Five (WCUSD5) doesn't deal in sexual absolutes; penises and vaginas may belong to women and men, respectively. Therefore, on May 15th, the system invited enrollees to the restroom of their choice. Per the "Use of Restroom Facilities and Other Gender Identities" policy, students can use the opposite-sex facility if they meet a crop of criteria:
- The Student (has) worked with a school social worker/counselor and a school administrator to develop a Gender Identity Plan which identifies a restroom other than the [one] designated for the student's biological sex
- The Student's parent(s) have agreed to the Gender Identity Plan, if the student is under the age of 18
- The Student has reviewed safety rules associated with the use of a bathroom and adheres to all safety rules
More on the Gender Identity Plan:
Students will...meet with a school social worker, a school administrator, and their parents when they request gender accommodations, including the use of preferred name and pronouns. ... The purpose of [the Gender Identity Plan] is twofold. First, the plan will establish clear parameters for the student and the school with respect to the student's gender identity, in an effort to plan for and anticipate issues that may occur, like harassment and bullying. Second, the plan will ensure the student has the (necessary) support...
Why is a school district involving itself in such issues? The answer, it would seem, is that education has evolved. Government training centers aim toward social goals in lieu of merely academic ones. But make no mistake -- WCUSD5 has alotted space for those so old-fashioned as to prefer sex-specific latrines. Or, at least, it had.
From an email sent to parents by Superintendent Brian Charron, recounting a recent pickle at Waterloo High:
When biologically male high school students came forward and stated they were uncomfortable with biological female students using male restrooms, we told [them] they could use the nurse's office restroom. It was an effort to support those students' comfort...
Comfort is critical -- so makes clear the district's legal counsel. While some areas of the country have taken action against sex-defying restroom use, WCUSD5 sides with urinal-worthy women -- "restrooms, locker rooms, and changing rooms may not be restricted based upon a student's physical anatomy or chromosomal sex."
But not everyone can be cozy. Sometimes asserting one's rights may amount to iniquity. Back to Super Brian:
[Offering the nurse's restroom to uncomfortable students] unfortunately...resulted in a disruption. The male students planned to use the nurse's office restroom at the same time, resulting in a line.
Situation: Untenable...
This line grew dramatically throughout the day with male and female students, filling the hallway and causing students to be tardy...or miss classes.
Improper be thy name:
These actions were not the appropriate way to send a message to the school district.
Actions send messages, and some messages are malignant:
We are investigating this behavior as planned harassment of transgender students...
Tolerance, schmolerance...
We want all parents and students to understand that we will not tolerate another significant disruption in school. ... Students who attempt to repeat today's actions will be disciplined for attempting to cause a disruption... To the extent we determine that the nurse's office bathroom line was a form of harassment, students will be disciplined for their participation in the harassment.
In the arena of contemporary governance, neutrality is fine for gender; not so concerning ideology:

Back to Waterloo Community Unit School District Five, they're doing what they can to impart sexual clarity. Parents Defending Education has obtained some of the system's LGBT material detailing the "legal rights of LGBTQI+ students."
As lamented by "Sarah Schriber, JD (she/her)":
- 75 percent of trans students (have) said they feel unsafe at school.
- 59 percent of transgender students [have] been required to use a bathroom that did not match the gender they live every day.
- 80 percent of transgender students (have) said they avoided bathrooms because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable.
Hence, among "schools' obligations":
- Not reveal students' identities to anyone else (including the students' families) without students' permission
- Protect students from bullying, harassment, and discrimination
Waterloo is doing its part -- by threatening punishment to pupils who perniciously line up for the (water) loo. Such harassment will be harshly halted.
So goes the modern Battle of Waterloo, and the clash over comfort in 2023.
