On Friday, California kindergarteners were set to learn about themselves. Potentially part of that enlightenment: They possess a gender identity in opposition to their sex.

A March 24th “Principal’s Weekly Update” for San Francisco-area Burton Valley Elementary announced festivities for a day of observance and education:

Next week you will notice a new flag on our flag pole, as we fly the Transgender Flag across all of the schools in [Lafayette School District (LafSD)] in accordance with [School Board Resolution 11-2223] to honor International Day of Visibility.

Additionally, the public K-5 school would learn via literature:

We will also be reading a story as a school called [It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity] by Theresa Thorn.

The emphasis is nothing new:

The conversations that might ensue next week are not new to our school. Each and every conversation we have with our Bobcats is about honoring and celebrating their individual identities, whatever they may be, as we know students learn best when they feel they are seen, valued and appreciated for who they are.

Not long ago, American public education aimed at academics. These days, schools seem pointed toward producing the sort of citizens our government prefers.

Some may say socialization has always been a component; if so, the desired outcome has terrifically transformed:

Burton Valley and LafSD are devoted to making a difference. The district boasts a Racial Equity Dashboard and a statement on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Also on offer: a Bias Incident Reporting System.

As for Resolution 11-2223, it declares the following:

Whereas, International Transgender Day of Visibility is a time to celebrate the lives and achievements of transgender, nonbinary, gender-queer, gender-nonconforming, and gender-diverse individuals around the world, to recognize the bravery it takes to live openly and authentically, and to uplift the racial, economic, and linguistic diversity within the transgender community; and

Whereas, record numbers of state-level bills and laws targeting the transgender community, and particularly children, have been introduced in recent years (at least 382 bills in 2023 legislative sessions across the U.S.); and

Whereas, such political attacks inflict damage on the health and well-being of transgender, nonbinary, gender-queer, gender-diverse and gender-nonconforming children.

Now therefore be it resolved that the Lafayette School District acknowledges…March 31, 2023, as Transgender Visibility Day and stands with the transgender community as it fights for freedom, safety, dignity, respect and most of all, love…

The statement also warns brave boys, girls, and others:

[T]ransgender, nonbinary, gender-queer, gender-nonconforming, and gender-diverse individuals are facing unprecedented threats of violence and are four times as likely to be a victim of violent crime…

We’ve quickly come far. Until relative moments ago, all human beings were nonbinary — “gender” as it’s contemporarily known hadn’t penetrated the lexicon. The concept is now vigorous and visible, and society is soaring on its wings:
