Champion of the 119th Congress: Alaska's Nick Begich III

Alaska's still an odd place, politically. (In lots of other ways, too, but that's a discussion for another time.) When it comes to politics, though, we do have one bragging point: The most productive member of the 119th Congress, with six bills penned, passed, and signed by President Trump, is our own at-large Republican Representative Nick Begich III (AK-At Large).

James Brown may have been the hardest-working man in show business, but Rep. Begich is the hardest-working man in Congress.

The 119th Congress is on track to be one of the least productive in recent history, furthering the trend of fewer and fewer bills ever becoming law. Setting aside the renaming of buildings such as post offices, most House lawmakers have never introduced a bill that a president signed into law.

Rep. Nick Begich III, the freshman lawmaker representing Alaska, is bucking that trend.

Since he entered the House in January 2025, six of Begich’s bills have passed through Congress and earned President Donald Trump’s signature — outpacing every one of his congressional colleagues.

Alaska has been the focus of a lot of attention in the 119th Congress. Much of this is due to land use, energy and mining issues, and Nick's concern has been focused not only on these issues but also in how they affect the Alaska Native communities who live in the areas where the mining and oil and gas development is taking place.

The six bills include:

  • H.R. 42 – Alaska Native Settlement Trust Eligibility Act (Public Law 119-22, signed July 7, 2025).
  • H.R. 43 – Alaska Native Village Municipal Lands Restoration Act of 2025 (Public Law 119-23, signed July 7, 2025).
  • H.R. 410 – Alaska Native Vietnam Era Veterans Land Allotment Extension Act of 2025 (Public Law 119-63, signed December 26, 2025).
  • H.R. 2815 – Cape Fox Land Entitlement Finalization Act of 2025 (Public Law 119-93).
  • H.J.Res. 106 – Providing for congressional disapproval under the Congressional Review Act of the Bureau of Land Management’s “Central Yukon Record of Decision and Approved Resource Management Plan” (Public Law 119-50, signed December 11, 2025).
  • H.J.Res. 131 – Providing for congressional disapproval under the Congressional Review Act of the Bureau of Land Management’s Coastal Plain Oil and Gas Leasing Program Record of Decision (Public Law 119-52, signed December 11, 2025).

The independent news agency NOTUS spoke with Rep. Begich:

“We’ve received a lot of cooperation and recognition on both sides of the aisle that Alaska-specific issues really belong in the hands of the Alaskan that was sent to Congress to represent Alaska,” Begich told NOTUS in an interview.

Speaker Mike Johnson also praised Rep. Begich's work:

“In his first term, Nick Begich has proven to be an historically effective member of Congress,” Speaker Mike Johnson, who recently campaigned with Begich in Alaska, said in a statement to NOTUS. “Nick is a workhorse who has set an excellent example of how House Republicans are working to deliver for American families.”

This is what our elected people are supposed to do. Nick is working for Alaska, and that's why he's likely to win reelection.

In our recent primary election, Nick came out in considerably better shape than most Alaska Republicans, and this has to be a big part of the reason why. It's something we sure didn't see from Nick's predecessor, Democrat Mary Peltola, who is now contending with Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) (no, not that Dan Sullivan, the incumbent Dan Sullivan) for his Senate seat. But this is how it should be done: Keep strong ties with your constituents, even if it means regular continent-spanning flights; keep working, keep your head down, let others deal with the cocktail party circuit; work to represent your constituents, which here, means all Alaskans.

This is why Nick Begich III is likely to win reelection; it may be why few Alaska Democrats and others saw fit to challenge him.
