Socialism in America: Not New, But This Time, Worse

It's time to admit what we have all known about today's Democratic Party for some time: It’s being taken over by communists. No, I’m not kidding. Not leftists, not “progressives,” not even socialists; a lot of these people are outright commies, even if they call themselves “Democratic Socialists.” There’s no such thing as a democratic socialist, of course; socialism, an economic system in which the government has seized the means of production, is inherently an authoritarian system, and is fundamentally opposed to democracy or, for that matter, the United States system of constitutional republicanism. There are a few sane Democrats still extant, but in Congress, I can think of only one: Senator John Fetterman (D-PA).

But this isn't the first time the United States has flirted with socialism/communism. It's happened before.

No one who’s kept up with U.S. politics even minimally over the last four decades should be surprised that the Democratic Party has been the launching pad for a wave of socialism. The party has long been rooted in socialist principles. It was inevitable that what the Democrats have long covered up is now out in the open and its zealots adherents are threatening our republic.

Granted, the wave is not overwhelming and our country has survived previous flirtations with socialism. But the boldness from the outright socialists, who are hiding behind the label of “democratic socialists,” cannot be waved away, and the Democratic Party will be responsible for the damage that the Democratic Socialists of America will wreak if voters don’t turn away the slate of the most radical candidates we’ve seen in some time.

This time, though, it's different. Oh, it started, as these things so often seem to, with one figure. Normally, such a figure, the person who starts a major social movement, is a pretty inspiring sort; charismatic, well-spoken, and let's face it, good-looking. But the current trend towards "democratic socialism" in the USA today seems to have sprung from the activism of someone who is none of those things; Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a man who does have one attribute of a socialist leader: He's never done an honest day's work in his life, and yet seems to have amassed a considerable net worth.

They are gaining steam, too. Organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have grown from roughly 6,000–8,000 members before 2016, to over 100,000 by early 2026, with chapters across all 50 states. High-profile figures such as that daffy old Bolshevik, Senator Sanders, along with New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC (NY-14), along with newer examples like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (a DSA member elected in 2025), have normalized the label.

And these people are leading a movement that’s as intellectually bereft as any political movement since the Know-Nothings. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t attracting followers. And that doesn't mean they will shy away from what commies do: Seizing private property, seizing the means of production, taking over and wrecking the nation's economy.

These things have been part of the Democratic Party's agenda for years.

Redistributing wealth to increase political power is not a new idea for them. Neither is their disdain for secure borders nor animosity toward their country. Democrats have sympathized with leftist dictators, from Fidel Castro to Daniel Ortega to Hugo Chavez while crusading for the seizure of private property and the means of production. The seeds that sprouted into hatred for Israel and Jews abroad were planted, watered and fertilized by yesterday’s more mainstream Democrats. Both the new and old have agitated for chaos so that they we are more easily divided and then conquered — because who else could fix the country’s problems other than someone who is willing to knock heads and put boots on necks?

We've seen all this before, beginning with Eugene Debs and other early American socialists. But what is it that's different this time?

Forget Obama and Biden - What Dems Want Now Is Much Worse

Because things are different this time. Here's why, and I'm going to tell you: Ideas, movements, ideologies, all move at lightning speed now. When the first round of American socialists and commies were shouting on street corners, that was primarily how the message spread. Oh, every city, every community had a newspaper, and radio was a thing. But now? Social media has supercharged the spread of ideas. Now, that is, in many cases, a good thing. It's allowed an entirely new, alternate, conservative media to arise, to challenge the old lefty legacy media. You're reading an example of that alternate media right now. Ideas now spread faster than ever before.

That old saying about sauce for the goose, however, applies. It's good for the spread of good ideas, and it's good for the spread of bad ideas, and the younger generations, those who use these new technologies the most, those young skulls full of mush, are the most susceptible to this nitwittery. A 2025 Heartland Institute/Rasmussen poll indicated that 53 percent of Americans under 40 would prefer to see a "democratic socialist" elected president in 2028. 76 percent of those young people agreed with nationalizing major industries, like health care and energy.

This isn't encouraging. Not one bit.

I think, honestly, that the next two elections will be key. If America lapses into socialism, getting out of it again may be impossible without major social upheaval, which the United States, as we know it, may not survive. And if Democrats attain power in 2026 and 2028, they will, using California's election system as their model, ensure that they will never have to surrender power again.

Vote! Vote! Vote! Vote this fall as though the survival of the republic is at stake - because it is.
