These last few days, it has sure seemed like the embattled Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell (CA-14) can't catch a break. He's been accused of sexual harassment and outright sexual assault, and he's been accused of keeping his (young, attractive) foreign-born in-house Brazilian nanny on in spite of her being in the country illegally - oh, and he was reportedly paying her under the table with campaign funds.
Now, he's facing a House of Representatives ethics probe, which could well result in his expulsion.
Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., an embattled lawmaker facing a potential expulsion threat, is the target of an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, the panel announced Monday.
At least four women have accused the California Democrat of sexual misconduct, according to multiple reports. The House panel said it is investigating an allegation "that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct toward an employee working under his supervision."
Swalwell suspended his gubernatorial campaign Sunday night amid widespread backlash following the sexual misconduct allegations.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., has vowed to introduce a resolution this week expelling Swalwell if he does not resign. Some Democrats have said they will support the measure.
Now, Rep. Swalwell is an American citizen, and like any citizen, he's entitled to all the constitutional protections that entails, including a presumption of innocence and due process. There's an awful lot of smoke here, though, and this piece of due process, an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, will be aimed at seeing how much fire there is under the smoke. Also, no due process is required for him to be shamed (assuming he is capable of feeling shame, which would seem to assume facts not in evidence) and pushed out of office. He has already withdrawn from the current California governor's race, where he was inexplicably the Democrats' leading candidate. That has to have California Democrats bollixed up some, since the California Republicans have some strong candidates. Who will California Dems get to run at this notice?
It's not often one gets to see a political career self-destruct so spectacularly. It's rather baffling that Rep. Swalwell wasn't defenestrated by his party or the California voters after the infamous Chinese honey trap incident, but he wasn't. This latest round of scandals, though, may just do the trick. The next time we see Eric Swalwell at work may be behind the counter of a Starbucks - or as a talking head for MSNOW, which doesn't appear to require as many IQ points as being a barista does.
The next few weeks will be very interesting indeed, as this House Ethics inquiry proceeds, and we presume, sooner or later, Rep. Swalwell will be required to explain himself.

As for Rep. Swalwell, all I can say is, it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
Then, there's this:
A spokesperson for Swalwell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
You don't say.
