There's dumb, then there's stupid, then there's this idea. A group in Oregon (of course) is pushing to get a measure on the ballot in that state, called the People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act, and it's as feather-headed a pile of low-IQ corral litter as I've seen as a while. This act, should it be approved by the voters, would outlaw any and all hunting and fishing in the state, but it would do far more; it may even prevent you from setting a mousetrap in your own kitchen.
A petition to ban hunting and fishing is being pushed in Oregon in the hopes that it may make it to the ballot this November.
KOIN reported that the petition seeks to pass the People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act.
The Act “would change the current Oregon animal cruelty laws, which currently protect pets such as dogs and cats, and would expand coverage to wild animals, livestock and animals used in research.”
David Michelson, the chief proponent of the petition, said:
We really want to make Oregon the first state to vote on something like this. We are aware that it’s unlikely 50% of Oregonians are ready right now to move away from killing animals. But we want to get that conversation out there. So that we can hopefully move in that direction.
I've got news for Mr. Michelson: He kills animals, too. He just outsources his killing. Even if he doesn't eat meat or any animal-derived products, which seems likely given his outpouring of nitwittery here, his vegetables still come with a considerable toll of animals from insects to birds to rodents killed, deliberately and accidentally, at every step of the production process. He, and the "ethical vegan" community, could forestall this by moving off the grid and carefully hand-growing all their own foods, but if you challenge them on that point, the answer is always - always - some variation of "it's too hard."
That's how shallow their so-called ethics really are.
Oregon hunters are clapping back:
KPTV quoted Oregon Hunter Association’s Amy Patrick: “This is something that has been around for the last five years…this is an initiative that is trying to basically outlaw the ability to kill or injure an animal for any reason other than self-defense. They want to make Oregon a sanctuary state.”
She added, “It would criminalize hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife management practices, education and teaching with animals, all the way down to your ability to trap pests and vermin.”
All in the name of a feather-headed proposal by someone with little or no knowledge of how nature works; no knowledge of producers and consumers, the concept of trophic levels, and the role of apex predators. Absent predators, prey populations explode, overeat their food sources, exceed carrying capacity, and then starve.

Apex predators are essential to the health of an ecosystem. They maintain healthy prey populations by keeping heavy eaters from getting out of hand. They control populations, and across most of North America, right now, the primary apex predator in all of America's varied environments is... us.
Yes. Us. We are and have been, for millions of years, an apex predator. In the United States and, yes, in Oregon, hunters provide an essential service in controlling the populations of animals like deer, which, as the number of hunters has decreased somewhat, are getting to be a real problem in some places, especially in the eastern states. It's natural, and it's desirable. Hunting and fishing not only is a natural and desirable activities, but it's good for kids; it shows them, without illusion, where their food comes from, that living life requires taking life, whether one does it by oneself or pays someone else to do the killing for them.
Here's the good thing: I suspect that, even in loony liberal Oregon, this is a bridge too far. If it gets on the ballot, I reckon it will go down hard. But the fact that it's being considered at all is a brilliant illustration of how little understanding of the natural world too many people have today.
