A deal between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland may be in the works, and it may have a profound impact on that icy island. While at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump spoke with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo and spelled out the possible deal.
President Trump said Thursday that the US will receive “total access” to Greenland under the terms of a “framework” deal announced a day earlier at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“We’re talking about it, it’s really being negotiated now, the details of it, but essentially it’s total access,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.”
“There’s no end, there’s no time limit.”
The president, who also ruled out using military force to annex the world’s largest island on Wednesday, stressed that Greenland is critical to national security and will be used for his vaunted space-based Golden Dome missile defense system.
“Everything comes over Greenland. If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland,” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo. “It’s pretty invaluable. It’s amazing.”
To this news, I can only reply: Called it. On Saturday, I wrote:
Here's the thing: With Denmark being a NATO ally, it would seem that some deal could be worked out that doesn't involve Greenland becoming an actual possession of the United States; I've been saying all along that a new basing treaty and some kind of deal for mineral rights would work just as well, without entangling the United States in a European-style social welfare system.
This may be a good deal for all concerned, if the president is correct on all the details. Increased basing for American and, presumably, NATO aircraft and possibly resupply for shipping, with increased American control over the bases. Perhaps some kind of pre-emptive mineral rights for the United States, as well; it seems the details are still being worked out, but President Trump sounds optimistic.

There's still a lot to be decided, of course.
Details of the framework are still murky, but reports indicate the US would get more control over land hosting US military installations, as well as European agreement to beef up Arctic security.
Pressed about whether the framework means the US will ultimately obtain Greenland, Trump responded: “I don’t know if I can say that. But it could be. It’s possible. Anything is possible.”
Note that this is not only some pretty good Art of the Deal stuff going on here, in that one asks for twice what one wants and expects to get half of what one needs, but it's also an object lesson for the flaccid leadership of Europe in how to exercise power. President Trump's freewheeling use of the tariff cudgel is still being litigated, but until the Supreme Court decides otherwise, the president is making free use of that big stick.
This is a man who knows power and how to wield it. Agree with him or disagree, but he knows what he wants. Europe's leaders have grown pretty flabby over the last few generations, and now they are beginning to figure out that there is a wolf in the flock.
