New: Trump Hitting Europe With Tariffs Over Greenland

Never let it be said that President Trump shies away from taking action. On Saturday, the president took to his Truth Social account to call the nations of Europe on the carpet for opposing the United States' proposal to make Greenland a possession of the United States.

The president's post is a lengthy one; here's a key point, however:

We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union, and others, for many years by not charging them Tariffs, or any other forms of remuneration. Now, after Centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it.

And, because of that:

Starting on February 1st, 2026, all of the above mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland), will be charged a 10% Tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America. On June 1st, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.

This seems like rather more than an "Art of the Deal" position. This is a serious move, and it would seem to indicate that President Trump has no intention of backing down.

President Trump cites the Golden Dome defense system, as well as Russian and Chinese interest in the North Atlantic and Arctic, as reasons for this move. But then, the president has, all along, cited Greenland's strategic location as a reason for pushing for an American takeover of the island. Any anti-missile system, to be effective against intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, would by necessity have to have a range that can cover the Arctic; that means Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland.

Here's the thing: With Denmark being a NATO ally, it would seem that some deal could be worked out that doesn't involve Greenland becoming an actual possession of the United States; I've been saying all along that a new basing treaty and some kind of deal for mineral rights would work just as well, without entangling the United States in a European-style social welfare system. As Danish citizens, Greenlanders currently have access to all of Denmark's generous social welfare programs, including generous cash benefits, socialized medicine, and so forth. They would doubtless expect that expensive proposition to continue under the United States.

The president concludes:

The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

There is also a Supreme Court case now making its way through the process, which may affect the president's ability to levy tariffs. That could have a major impact here.

Stay tuned. Things are getting interesting.
