Greenland's Prime Minister Sounds the Alarm for... an 'Invasion?'

President Donald Trump's bold move to acquire Greenland is illustrative of the overall boldness of his second term in office. With Russian and Chinese interests in the Arctic increasing, the U.S. acquisition of Greenland would be a smart strategic move. The White House has stated that Trump has discussed "a range of options" for a possible acquisition, including buying the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. For Trump, it is a matter of national security for the U.S. But with the future of the island being a bit uncertain, its prime minister is adding fuel to that fire.

On Tuesday, Greenland's PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen spoke at a press conference where he stated that the island's population might want to start preparing for a possible military invasion, presumably by the United States. “It’s not likely there will be a military conflict, but it can’t be ruled out," Nielsen said. Nielsen went on to say that the government of Greenland will form a task force of representatives to assist the population with any disruptions to their daily lives. The government is also coming up with guidelines that include advising people to have at least a five-day supply of food in their homes. Greenland's former leader and current minister of finance, Múte B. Egede, also chimed in, saying that Greenland is under “a lot of pressure," and “we need to be ready for all scenarios."

As my colleague Ward Clark recently reported, apparently, to stave off a U.S. invasion, Denmark and seven other NATO countries sent a total of 34 troops to Greenland as a security measure as part of "Operation Arctic Endurance." Trump has threatened the nations involved with new tariffs beginning February 1.

Isn't Nielsen being a bit of an alarmist here? Donald Trump is sending the U.S. into Greenland, guns a blazin' to start breaking into people's houses and terrifying women and children? Hardly. While the ultimate goal of the people of Greenland might be to be an independent nation, in the meantime, they would be treated very differently than under Danish rule.

Denmark has a history of using forced sterilization on the largely indigenous population. There was also other medical experimentation, and a program that ran from the '50s through the '70s, where Greenlandic children were forcibly sent to Denmark to either be adopted or end up in institutions without parental consent in an attempt to assimilate them.

But could such a statement from Greenland's head of state also be on purpose? Trump is set to travel to Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum, where Greenland will most likely be a topic. With uneasiness from those NATO nations, could it be an attempt to make Trump look bad on the world stage? Maybe, but Donald Trump wants what is best for America. One of the best things about his second term is that he doesn't have to care what other world leaders are thinking.

Greenland's Prime Minister Nielsen seems a bit over the top by telling his citizens they have to ready themselves for an invasion by the United States. He can be reasonably assured that no doors are being kicked in and prisoners taken anytime soon.
