Untold pixels have been spilled on the subject of illegal immigration, in the legacy media, the alternative media, and the blogosphere. President Trump was re-elected, in no small part, due to his promise to address the wide-open borders policy of the Biden years, and despite opposition at every step from the legacy media and Democrats (but I repeat myself) he's been doing that.
But what about legal immigration?
Some recent polling has revealed that a plurality of responders would like to see legal immigration reduced, or even halted altogether.
Two-thirds of Republicans want legalized migration to be decreased or ended, says a new poll by YouGov.
In contrast, 17 percent of Democrats want legalized migration to be cut back, says the of 1,632 citizens, which was conducted December 11-15.
But 37 percent of Democratic voters want more legal migration, and as does six percent of GOP voters, said the poll.
Amid the partisan polarization, there is a two-to-one plurality for less migration vs more migration. Just 18 percent of citizens want legalized migration to be increased, while 35 percent want it decreased or zeroed.
Twenty-five percent said the number should not be changed, even though establishment outlets rarely described the actual inflow of legalized migrants each year. Under Joe Biden, the inflow of all migrants was roughly level with the number of births.
The left loves to point out that the United States is a nation of immigrants, and while that's technically true - even the people we call American Natives are descended from migrants who came from Asia and possibly Polynesia - it's of no bearing on American immigration policy today. It's a factoid of no consequence. The fact is that the United States did restrict immigration to various degrees in the past, most notably from the late 19th century until 1965.
No nation can sustain unlimited immigration, legal or illegal. This YouGov poll would seem to support the notion that many Americans understand that.
Illegal immigration is another story:
Other polls show overwhelming support for the deportation of all illegal migrants who commit major crimes, and a solid majority support for the deportation of all illegal migrants.
That's not surprising.

The fact is that immigration is, in large part, a matter of freedom of association. The citizens of a nation, any nation, anywhere, have the right to determine who should and should not be allowed to immigrate into their nation. This has been the case throughout human history; it's only been in recent years, in the developed Western nations, that some countries have adopted immigration and "refugee" policies that seem downright self-destructive. Recent events in Europe, in the United States, and most recently in Australia, are providing us with harsh examples of the dangers of unchecked, uncontrolled immigration.
This can't be sustained, and it shouldn't be sustained. We can make a case for legal immigration, but that, too, must be controlled; importing a software engineer from Japan isn't the same policy matter as importing 10,000 "refugees" from Afghanistan. American immigration can and should be limited to the people who have marketable skills to offer, and who come here with the desire and the goal to become Americans, with all that this means.
Polling, including this latest survey, indicates that a strong plurality of Americans already agree with this.
