I can't be the only one who wishes Barack Obama would fade peacefully away into retirement. Remember when former presidents used to do that? President Reagan retired peacefully to his California ranch. His successor, George H.W. Bush, quietly withdrew from public life when his one term was up. But President Obama continues to insert himself into national affairs, probably because the guy who, under normal circumstances, would have replaced him at the helm of the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, is in his Rehoboth Beach house drooling into a pudding cup.
Barack Obama still feels like he needs to publicly advise his fellow Democrats, and if we're being charitable, we can suppose that, yes, someone has to pull the brake on this crazy train. But the former president's advice isn't anything about not being crazy; he's advising Democrats to "toughen up."
Former President Obama’s message to Democrats is to “just toughen up” amid frustration with the political landscape under President Trump.
“I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up,” Obama said in remarks at a private fundraiser Friday in New Jersey, according to excerpts of his remarks obtained by CNN.
“Don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something,” he said.
He's probably right about the omphaloskepsis; it's not doing the Dems any good, to the extent they're contemplating anything other than choosing between electric blue and hot pink for this week's hair dye. But toughen up? I think that's a big ask for today's Democrats. There just isn't any tough in them.
The former president continues:
“What’s being asked of us is make some effort to stand up for the things that you think are right. And be willing to be a little bit uncomfortable in defense of your values, and in defense of the country, and in defense of the world that you want to leave to your children and your grandchildren,” Obama said.
“And if we all do that — if we do our jobs over the next year and a half — then I think we will rebuild momentum, and we will position ourselves to get this country moving in the direction it should.”
Momentum? Seriously? Oh, they have momentum. The problem is, it's on the wrong vector. If the Dems wanted to remain a national party, a viable alternative, they should be listening to the few remaining sane people in the party, like (and I can't believe I'm saying this) Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). Instead, the Democrats are embracing the lunatics. The party has ridden out of the left lane, through the ditch, across the bean field to land smack dab on Wacko Street in Crazy Town.
Maybe President Obama would do better to give Dems some actual useful advice, like "You know, you're on the wrong side of everything. Stop agitating to keep boys in girls' sports and their locker rooms. Stop supporting perverts coming into libraries and schools to have story hours with other people's kids. Stop interfering with ICE and the Border Patrol, when the majority of the country wants this mass illegal immigration problem fixed. Stop obsessing over pronouns. Stop being crazy. And for the love of Pete, stop dying your hair every color of the rainbow!"

The Democrats used to have some actual statesmen in their ranks. I've followed politics for almost half a century, and I remember when the Democrats had senior members you could respect; the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) was one. Even if you disagreed with him, and I almost always did, you listened to him and took him seriously. Ask yourself, though: Is there anyone in the Democratic Party, on the national scale, who warrants such respect?
Democrats don't need to just toughen up. They need to regain some semblance of sanity. As the great Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) put it, Democrats have to try harder not to suck.
