Schumer, Jeffries Bow to the Inevitable, Endorse Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris's maneuvering to become the Democrat's official presidential nominee seems to be bearing fruit. On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) bowed to the inevitable and, in a joint press conference, endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democrat candidate for president.

Because why not?

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) are slated to hold a joint press briefing Tuesday.

It is expected the two congressional leaders could use the moment to endorse Vice President Harris for president.

Both lawmakers praised Harris on Monday as “off to a great start” in her bid to win the Democratic nomination for president but stopped short of endorsing her Monday.

The Democratic leaders also acknowledged Harris for promising to pursue the nomination “in a manner consistent with the grassroots and transparent process set forth by the Democratic National Committee (DNC).”

The last few bricks are falling into place. Barack Obama is among the last holdouts, and it's anyone's guess what he will do. The Democrats are on the cusp of anointing a presidential candidate by fiat by having already-pledged convention delegates just switch their votes without any input from primary voters.

This is a fundamentally undemocratic process.

Schumer and Jeffries have joined a growing list of Democrats endorsing the vice president's run for the White House, including 10 of 23 Democrat governors, 32 of 47 senators, and 153 of 212 members of the House of Representatives. Vice President Harris is bragging of a major fundraising haul following President Biden's announcement of his withdrawal from the race, although it's unclear as to whether this is just an unlocking of donor funds withheld due to concerns over the president's health.

The vice president, shortly after Schumer and Jeffries' announcement, jetted off to swing state Michigan to hold a campaign event. On landing, she ignored the reporters' questions. One wonders if this will become a pattern for the presumptive Democratic candidate.

Vice President Harris is, as of this writing, facing an uphill climb. The RealClearPolitics polling average has former President Donald Trump leading Harris by 1.9 points, with the most recent polls having Trump ahead by two points (Morning Consult, Quinnipiac), six points (Forbes/HarrisX), and three points (CBS News).

Battleground state polls are not yet reflecting the change-up in the presumed Democratic ticket, but former President Trump is maintaining a comfortable lead in those races.
