Well into the first year of her second term, Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan is proving that when a Democrat is given control of the executive and legislative branches of state government, they are going to cram things through that are creepy and quite possibly unconstitutional.
However, don't you worry -- the chant of "it's for the children" is not far behind.
I have covered the goings-on in my home state and have watched Whitmer maneuver through some really gross actions. If you recall, she was the COVID lockdown queen from 2020 into early 2021, then she realized she was up for reelection the next year and presto, that ended.
As I wrote below, in Michigan Leads Nation in COVID Cases and Governor Lockdown Is All of a Sudden Missing
Michigan is in a crisis and it is one of biblical proportions, and our most noble leader seems to be missing. Actually, I’m not serious, we have seen COVID spikes before and we got through it but Governor Whitmer is missing this time and we need leadership. Maybe just not hers, though.
Did anyone check to see if she charted a private jet again to head to Florida like she did a couple of times last year? BREAKING: Complaint Filed Against Gretchen Whitmer Over Charter Jet Trip to Florida Last March.
The Great Lakes State is once again making some headlines because we have a spike in COVID and this has the media in the state heading for the hills in fear. Unlike last year, though, our part-time fearless Governor is not only NOT issuing orders to save the lives of the unwashed masses, she can’t be found anywhere to offer a meager comment.
From The Detroit News…
Michigan again leads the country in new COVID-19 cases per population over the last seven days, according to tracking data Tuesday from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The state has reported a seven-day new case rate of 504 per 100,000 residents, the highest number nationally, the CDC found. Minnesota followed in second at 490. The figures are another setback in the state’s 20-month fight against the virus and came amid spikes in new infections that are testing the capacity of Michigan’s hospitals.
Michigan last led the nation in new cases per population in the spring during a surge that peaked in April. It remains unclear how long the latest surge will last and how it will affect health care workers who’ve been dealing with the pandemic since March 2020.
So where is Whitmer?
Her PR team told her to knock it off, and that the public has a very short memory span in a blue state. It worked. She won handily by nine points in November 2022.
Well, she is still at it and now has a Democrat-controlled House and Senate--which was not the case her full, first four years. She is gonna go hog wild, but this time on grabbing guns, which is talked about here
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Monday that would crack down on gun possession by domestic violence offenders but would also result in gun ownership rights being revoked for Michiganians convicted of dozens of non-assaultive crimes.
The bills, spearheaded by state Sen. Stephanie Chang, D-Detroit, would block domestic violence offenders from owning or possessing a firearm for eight years after completing their sentence, a change that partially mirrors federal prohibitions on gun ownership after a domestic violence misdemeanor. A similar state-level waiting period for misdemeanors involving a firearm was needed to make it possible for state and local law enforcement officials to enforce it, advocates said.
“We need to give our state-level prosecutors and law enforcement the tools to enforce this kind of prohibition,” Chang said in a hearing earlier this fall.
Sounds scary, right? Domestic violence offenders.
This is part of the bill, though, and it is super scary.
Among the high court misdemeanors and felonies that legislative analysis indicate now will be potentially subject to a three- to five-year gun rights suspension: Certain lobbying and campaign finance violations, false statements on a veterans benefit application, certain gambling offenses, disorderly conduct at a funeral, possession of an aquatic prohibited species and knowingly allowing an MMA or boxing professional to compete against an amateur in an amateur contest.
Other crimes on the list include violation of a law prohibiting the alteration of a bottle return machine (a two-year felony) and breaking into a coin-operated vending machine with intent to steal its contents (a three-year felony), according to the nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency.
The House Fiscal Agency analysis indicates that since the changes aren't part of any given sentence, "they would apply to all those whose sentences have not been completed when the bill takes effect, in addition to those convicted or sentenced after that date."
Breaking into a coin-operated vending machine or owning an aquatic species could be considered domestic violence now.
Of course, if you punched someone in the face to get those coins, or to get that baby tiger shark that you're not supposed to own, I guess they could have a point. Yet, they don't specify that in the bill, which means that leaves the law open to interpretation for prosecutors to prosecute and for judges to rule on.
Way too many variables for me to feel comfortable with, but this is exactly what the gun grabbers in the country want.
I wish that the state of Michigan had an opposition Party that could fight this nonsense but currently, the Michigan GOP is broke in both the bank balance -- and intelligence.
I wrote about that here TOAST: Michigan GOP Is About to Default on Loan Payments, According to Budget Cmte. Member Who Resigned
The Michigan Republican Party is considering how to deal with "imminent default" on its line of credit, according to a resignation letter from a member of the state GOP's budget committee.
The message, obtained Thursday by The Detroit News, reveals the seriousness of the financial problems facing a party in a battleground state a year before the 2024 presidential general election. Kristina Karamo, the Michigan GOP's chairwoman, has struggled to raise money after rising to power in February while railing against the party's "establishment," including past donors.
Jessica Barefield of Livingston County serves on the Michigan Republican Party's state committee, which features about 100 members. She also had been one of 13 Republicans on the influential budget committee, helping to oversee the finances. Barefield said in a resignation letter the budget committee had a Friday "emergency meeting" when the panel "was asked to weigh in on action steps regarding the imminent default on the line of credit," indicating the party is struggling to meet its obligations to pay back its past debts.
No wonder people are fleeing this state.
I hate to rely on the courts to fix this, but that is all we have here in the Mitten state.
Wish us luck, America.
