Democrats Are One Step Closer to Nuking Most of Virginia's GOP Congressional Seats

We're in the thick of it now, folks.

With the midterm elections looming in November – and Republicans holding just a razor-thin majority in the U.S. House of Representatives – Democrats are doing everything they can right now to rig things in their favor come Election Day.

One of those things is to wrest House seats from the GOP through redistricting/gerrymandering. What began as an all-out push by the Trump administration to have red states redraw boundaries (based on fresh census data) to favor Republicans ahead of the midterms has turned into a bit of a fiasco as crucial Republican-controlled states like Indiana abandon their redistricting efforts and Democrat-controlled states like Virginia go all-in on theirs.

In fact, Virginia Democrats are now one step closer to nuking three or four congressional seats currently held by Republicans, having set April 21 as the date for holding a referendum vote on new maps. The proposed date has to be approved by the Democrat-controlled state legislature and Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger before the referendum can go before Virginians for a vote, but there's little question the date will be approved by all.

Here's the proposed language of the referendum question, as put forth by Democrats.

“Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

The "temporarily" part is interesting, considering the Democrats are attempting to nuke Republicans into the smallest of minorities for generations to come. As I noted in a post last week, if the proposal passes, "Democrats will almost definitely go from holding 6 of Virginia's 11 congressional seats to holding 10 of them. Republicans will go from holding 5 of Virginia's 11 congressional seats to holding 1 of them. That one lone seat will be in the sparsely populated, yet very conservative, southwest area of the state."

There's another scenario that would see the GOP hold onto two if its existing five House seats, but state Democrats have not exactly been shy about wanting ten congressional seats. Here's the president pro tempore of the Virginia state Senate:

Also me from last week: "It bears pointing out that Virginians in 2020 voted in favor of transferring the power to redraw congressional and legislative districts from the state legislature to a redistricting commission. That amendment passed with about 65.7 percent of the vote statewide. Voter will now have to decide whether to replace that amendment with the one teed up by state Democrats."

So, Virginians have previously voted against lawmakers controlling the state's congressional maps, but it's likely going to take a big push – and a lot of outside money! – for Republicans to beat this one back.
