Greetings from the commonwealth of Virginia, where Democrat Abigail Spangberger became our governor Saturday at noon. We're a blue-ish state that's about to become a deep-blue state for generations to come, and that's something that's making Vice President JD Vance extremely angry.
Vance let his frustrations be known on X, calling out Indiana Republicans for failing to act on redistricting late last year. Guess who's not going to fail to act on redistricting ahead of this year's midterms? Virginia Democrats, that's who.
First let's look at the vice president's tweet, which calls out Indiana Republican Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray "for not even trying to fight back against this extraordinary Democrat abuse of power." Vance is most displeased at Bray, and he has every right to be.
I'd like to thank @bray_rodric for not even trying to fight back against this extraordinary Democrat abuse of power.

Now the votes of Indiana Republicans will matter far less than the votes of Virginia Democrats. We told you it would happen, and you did nothing. https://t.co/oj1XvXHKvM
Here's what's going on.
The vice president made his comment Saturday in response to a tweet posted by Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA-02), who was sharing the results of a Friday vote in the the Democrat-controlled Virginia House of Delegates. The Virginia House had just voted to advance an amendment to the state constitution that would allow a new congressional map to be drawn, possibly netting Democrats four seats in Congress. Kiggans' is one of those seats that would be lost for Republicans.
The redistricting amendment would first have to pass a voter referendum before it can go into effect. With Democrat Abigail Spanberger now firmly ensconced in the Governor's Mansion, she will likely set the referendum vote date for sometime in April, so, if it passes, it can take effect in time for the midterms in November.

But, wait, you say, can't the Republican Party fight the referendum and stop this disaster from happening? Technically, yes, but the results from last November speak for themselves; Republicans have given up on Virginia. Without big guns and big money coming into the commonwealth right now, it's pretty much a done deal. Democrats will almost definitely go from holding 6 of Virginia's 11 congressional seats to holding 10 of them. Republicans will go from holding 5 of Virginia's 11 congressional seats to holding 1 of them. That one lone seat will be in the sparsely populated, yet very conservative, southwest area of the state.
It bears pointing out that Virginians in 2020 voted in favor of transferring the power to redraw congressional and legislative districts from the state legislature to a redistricting commission. That amendment passed with about 65.7 percent of the vote statewide. Voter will now have to decide whether to replace that amendment with the one teed up by state Democrats.
Guess who's been actively pushing Virginia Democrats hard in this direction? Democrat House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), that's who. Jeffries has been seen in recent weeks huddling with Virginia Democrats, hoping to secure enough seats to make him Speaker in the next Congress.
As Vice President Vance pointed out in his tweet, Indiana Republicans could have helped negate the losses in Virginia by coming up with two congressional seats through their own redistricting. Having failed to do that, the math is really hurting the GOP; if each party retains their current open seats, Republicans will head into the midterms with only a three-seat majority.
