Marco Rubio Has Cabinet Meeting in Stitches Over Labor Day Comment (Video)

Cabinet meetings tend to be very serious business, with each member at the table being tasked with updating the president on the successes and challenges of their respective departments and agencies. It's a pulse check on how the administration as a whole is faring, so the stakes can be high, especially when you consider the heavy workloads President Trump places on his team.

The meetings also can be boring and overly bureaucratic for the general public, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio (!!) kept things lively at Tuesday's Cabinet meeting with his funny, on-the-nose comment about the upcoming Labor Day holiday. And he delivered it perfectly—it's obvious no one was expecting Rubio to be the class clown today.

Watch out, Senator Kennedy—Marco Rubio may be coming for your King of D.C. Comedy crown.

RUBIO: Mr. President -- first of all, everybody's made this comment already, it needs to be echoed again: you were elected as president of working Americans. And that's why this Labor Day is so meaningful.

For me, personally, this the most meaningful Labor Day of my life, as someone with four jobs.

The comment not only elicited a smile from the president, it also got a big laugh from both Rubio's fellow Cabinet members and the media assembled in the Cabinet Room to cover the meeting. "It's true, it's true," said a clearly-amused President Trump.

Rubio, of course, has taken on a few side gigs to complement his main role leading the State Department (he was the first Cabinet secretary to be confirmed, with his nomination having passed the Senate on Inauguration Day). Here's what else is currently on his resume:

  • Acting Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); and,
  • Acting Archivist of the United States.

And Rubio is in very good company, with several other Trump appointees also celebrating this Labor Day with loaded schedules.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy also moonlights as Interim Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Russ Vought is Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) by day and leads the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by night. And Jamieson Greer does double duty as acting Director of the Office of Government Ethics and acting Special Counsel of the Office of Special Counsel.

A few non-Cabinet-level appointees are also pulling extra weight, with Daniel Driscoll serving as both Secretary of the Army and acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Todd Blanche holding the positions of Deputy Attorney General and acting Librarian of Congress.

Tuesday's Cabinet meeting was not completely a light-hearted affair. As RedState's Jennifer Oliver O'Connell reported, a member of the media in the room to cover the meeting shared a harrowing story of how she was assaulted and pistol whipped on the streets of Washington, D.C., a few years back. Trump made a point of calling on NTD News D.C. correspondent Iris Tao, asking her to share her story of how dangerous the streets of the Nation's Capital had become thanks to decades of Democrat rule.
