Trump's Troubling Unfavorables

Donald Trump is fond of pointing to “all the polls,” as proof of his dominance in the current GOP contest. His acolytes are very proud.

What Trump and his fans fail to take into account is electability. They don’t quite grasp that winning this primary contest doesn’t make him “President Trump.” It makes him “Nominee Trump,” with the big test awaiting him in November. The same boorish antics that have carried him through the primary season will likely not play as well in a general election.

A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows that Trump’s unfavorable rating with women is at about 70%. Another poll shows that nearly half (47%) of women polled can’t see themselves casting a vote for Trump.

From a recent Washington Examiner article:

“Moreover, the tendency among women voters to lean Democratic became even more pronounced when they were asked to consider a Trump versus Clinton matchup.

In that scenario, 31 percent of women would vote for Trump, while 58 percent would choose Clinton.”

The vote of women is crucial in any election. Trump hasn’t done much in the way of endearing himself to that bloc. His latest attacks on Ted Cruz’s wife, Heidi, will likely not help him.

There is also the vote of the college educated. Trump, after his Nevada win, said something to the effect of, “I love the uneducated.” That may be with good reason.

A February Quinnipiac poll showed that the higher the education, the greater the turnout in voting among that class. Voters with a Bachelors or higher enjoy a turnout of 75% to 81%. Similarly, when those larger groups of educated voters are polled about Trump, he has the highest unfavorable rating of any candidate running, at 66%.

Trumpkins may fool themselves that winning this battle matters, but the goal should be to win the war and Trump cannot do it.
