New Details on Texas Flooding Tragedy Shed More Light on What Happened, Debunk Early Narratives

It's been a week and a half since the devastating July 4th flash flooding that ravaged parts of Central Texas, with Kerr County being particularly hard hit.

Tragically, as of this writing, 132 have been confirmed dead - including 36 children, while over 160 remain unaccounted for as search and recovery efforts continue.

As RedState has reported, the Usual Suspects on the left and in the mainstream media, unfortunately, jumped into "blame game" mode soon after news broke of the flooding, with some blaming DOGE cuts that haven't even gone into effect yet, while others sickeningly took to social media platforms like TikTok to suggest, in a nutshell, that the victims deserved it since Texas is Trump country.

One of the early narratives that was debunked last week was the allegation that there were "no advance warnings" or "not enough warnings" at the state and federal levels ahead of the rising waters that quickly overtook the banks of the Guadalupe River and washed over nearby Camp Mystic, a summer campground for young Christian girls.

The Associated Press, of all places, reported on how there had in fact been warnings from the NWS office in the area, which had extra staffers on hand for the weather event. And CNN noted that "on July 2nd, two days before this, the state is already sending out press releases, saying, be careful. You've got this weather storm. You've got this storm coming through, raising the alarm bells."

"And the Texas Department of Emergency Management is moving in resources," they went on to say. "They're moving the resources in, were saying to the locals, we have things available for you, we have emergency response available for you, so get prepared."

On Monday, the Washington Post revealed the results of an investigation they conducted as to what happened and when, and discovered even more information that dovetails with reports about warnings being sent out in the overnight hours:

From the story:

Camp Mystic Executive Director Richard “Dick” Eastland did not begin to evacuate the young campers asleep in cabins near the rapidly rising Guadalupe River for more than an hour after he received a severe flood warning on his phone from the National Weather Service at 1:14 a.m. on July 4, the family said through a spokesman.

Eastland — who had run the beloved Christian-centered all-girls camp in Hunt, Texas, with his wife since the 1980s — rallied family members, some of whom lived and worked at the camp, on walkie-talkies to “assess the situation” soon after the alert went out, said Jeff Carr, the family’s spokesman. At 2:30 a.m., when rain was falling hard and fast, Eastland decided to begin evacuating campers, Carr said.

Richard Eastland Jr., Dick Eastland’s son, said in a brief interview with The Washington Post last week that “the warning came fast.” The camp had previously been under a flood watch that leadership was aware of, Eastland Jr. said. The National Weather Service’s more urgent alert at 1:14 a.m. had warned of “life threatening flash flooding” in Kerr County, where Camp Mystic is in a flood zone. The alert did not include an evacuation order. The federal agency does not have the authority to issue evacuation orders, a power that typically falls to local governments.

The family says Mr. Eastland, who was 70, died as he attempted to rescue some of the young girls in the camp.

The report also indicated that it was "unclear" if any attempts were made to call 911. Also, the WaPo noted that the camp did have a loudspeaker system in place, "but it would have gone silent without electricity."

Undoubtedly, more revelations will be forthcoming as the investigations continue. Along with that, let's hope that the finger-pointing and the crass politicizing from the people who engaged in it early on will stop, because at this point, it's looking like pretty much everything they tried to claim about what did and did not happen was false.

In the meantime, please continue to keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
