GOP Rep Says Mueller Must End His Witch Hunt and Step Aside

Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs (R) penned an op-ed in USA Today calling for special counsel Robert Mueller to recuse himself in the investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election due to an “investigation [that] is clearly careening far beyond the scope of his original charge.”

We learned after Mueller’s appointment that former FBI director James Comey leaked government memos meaning to influence the appointment of a special counsel. Comey’s actions were rewarded by a news media frenzy that backed the administration into a corner, leading to the selection of his close friend, Mueller.

After assuming the role, Mueller has made blatantly partisan hires that place the direction of his probe under a cloud of suspicion. These hires are, in part, due to a failure of the Department of Justice to officially vet its prosecutors or agents. Unfortunately, Mueller exploited this lapse in policy.

We should be deeply concerned with Mueller’s unlimited reach and unvetted hires. The way Mueller has conducted and unilaterally expanded his investigation, the subordinates he has hired, the persistent leaks from his office, and his abuse of attorney-client privilege — would all suggest his preference for questionable tactics.

Biggs believes Mueller is incapable of conducting a fair and unbiased investigation into exactly how Russia may have exerted influence in the election that pitted Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton. Democrats, of course, have long contended that Russia may have used social media to conduct a misinformation campaign that was intended to have a deleterious effect on the Clinton campaign. The issue, they say, is, if such a campaign existed, what role did the Trump campaign play in it?

Republicans like Biggs counter by pointing to an investigation that has so far produced evidence only (and primarily) of a trumped up dossier that looks to have been created to make it appear as if there was collusion between the Trump camp and Russia — and that was funded by the Clinton campaign.

Biggs, in fact, alluded to this on a Fox News segment to discuss his recent op-ed:

We need to get the Inspector General to hurry up with his report, give us the information, because what we’ve have seen is the Democrats have changed their tune, completely. You recall, they were asking for Russian — they’re accusing Trump with Russian collusion.

Now, we don’t hear that anymore. What we’re hearing is obstruction of Justice. This has got to be brought back to a focused investigation so we can see whether there was collusion.

Because what we’re seeing now is the collusion came from the DNC and Hillary Clinton. What we’re seeing is that there were actually people at the highest level of our government trying to manipulate the election. That’s what it appears to be.

Biggs further suggested the investigation has become so partisan that it has morphed into a witch hunt that seeks “any way to get President Trump out of office. That’s what they want to do.”
