Here's Why the Criminal Case Against Suspect in Fatal Beating of 'Trump House' Owner Has Been Put on Hold

RedState reported in mid-May on the tragic case out of California of an elderly Trump supporter who was brutally beaten outside of his Escondido home, which was known locally as the "Trump House" due to the large number of Trump signs and American flags that were displayed on the outside of it.

Here are some photos of what the house's owner, 69-year-old Kerry Sheron, who reports describe as a United States Army veteran, looked like before and after the attack:

The update his wife, Maria Garcia, provided as her husband was in the ICU was that there was "no hope," that Mr. Sheron was not expected to survive. Sadly, she was right.  Mr. Sheron died four days later from injuries he sustained in the violent attack.

The suspect in the case, 32-year-old Navy veteran Thomas Caleb Butler, was arrested a few blocks away after he ran from the scene. While speculation has swirled that the attack was politically motivated, one person who spoke to San Diego's ABC 10 News said he knew both Sheron and Butler and believes it was mental health issues that prompted the attack, not politics:

Police have not released a motive for the attack, though the home's prominent political display has raised questions about a possible political motivation.

Joseph, who says he became friends with Sheron and his wife through conversations while walking past the home, does not believe the attack was politically motivated. He says he knows Butler and describes him as a known transient with mental health issues.

"He lives where he can. A lot of randomly yelling in the air," Joseph said.

"Documents filed in San Diego Superior Court by Butler’s estranged wife last year describe Butler as a veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and allege a history of violent behavior," The Mercury News shared.

In an update to this story, we're learning that the case is now on hold pending a mental competency evaluation of Butler, who faces murder charges:

Criminal proceedings were paused Friday for a man accused of beating to death the owner of an Escondido home known for displaying American flags and banners supporting President Donald Trump after a defense attorney questioned his client’s mental competency.

Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was slated to be arraigned on a murder charge in Vista Superior Court on Friday. Instead, Judge Richard Monroy suspended the case until a court-appointed psychiatrist can evaluate Butler and determine his ability to understand the proceedings he faces.

This was the second time this week that supporters of the victim left the courthouse frustrated. Butler, who has been jailed without bail since the attack May 20, was supposed to be in court Wednesday but refused to attend the hearing, and it was rescheduled for Friday. He was not present at Friday’s hearing either.

Meanwhile, the community has rallied around the victim and his wife, holding rallies, showing up for hearings, and even starting a GoFundMe, which so far has raised nearly $61,000.
