Contrary to what they want people to think, the Texas Democrats who packed into a private jet complete with cases of Miller Lite beer Monday and took off to Washington, D.C. in an effort to kill a state election reform bill proposal are not stunning and brave and they most certainly aren’t courageous heroes making great sacrifices a la civil rights icons from days gone by.
Also contrary to what they and the Biden administration want people to believe, the bill in question is not a “voter suppression” bill nor is it “Jim Crow,” as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pointed out in an explainer on the bill yesterday.
But one interesting component on the actions of the Texas Democrats that hasn’t been touched on much is how what they’re doing is effectively a filibuster. Though they bailed on their constituents by leaving the state (which is wrong), the idea behind them running away is to stall the bill and prevent it from moving forward, which is more or less what a filibuster does.
Perhaps with the Democratic position on how the filibuster should be reformed or abolished, and President Joe Biden’s evolving views on the matter in mind, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy sparred with White House press secretary Jen Psaki on the matter today, and in the process got her to admit towards the end of their back and forth on the subject that President Biden supports what the Democrats who fled Texas are doing.

What happened during this particular exchange were two things that ultimately could come back and haunt Biden his fellow Democrats in the 2022 midterms and beyond. For starters, Democrats have been desperate to paint Texas blue for years, but my gut feeling about Democrats in Texas is that there are enough old-school Democrats there who do not appreciate their state legislators cutting and running even if they agree with them about the election reform bill. Suggesting Biden is on board with what those lawmakers are doing could be one more thing that could backfire on Dem attempts to turn Texas blue on down the line.
Secondly, in effect, Psaki as much as admitted that Biden backs using whatever approach works to stalling legislation you oppose which, again, is the filibuster in a nutshell. Republicans will be able to use this argument against him later as House/Senate Dem attempts to reform/abolish the filibuster are not going away anytime soon, especially after what happened with the H.R. 1/S.1 bills.
On a related note, Doocy’s track record on getting Psaki to make key admissions like this is pretty impressive. I’ve lost count on the number of times he’s done so, but we’ve documented many of them here.
