As my RedState colleagues have previously reported, Portland, Oregon continues to be a hellhole of violent Antifa activity, with lawlessness and chaos being more the rule than the exception and “leaders” like Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) giving a whole new meaning to the words “feckless” and “incompetent.”
The reporting from CNN about the situation in Portland, on the other hand, has been nothing but straight up gaslighting similar to what we saw from them in their segments on the riots in New York City in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd as well as their “on the scene” reports out of Seattle after the anarchistic CHOP/CHAZ occupation became a thing for a few weeks.
But CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter has taken the gaslighting even further than most of his colleagues, reporting primarily from the “conservatives pounce” angle because of course how conservatives are reacting to the destruction of a major American city is the real story.
Here are a couple of recent examples of how Stelter has “reported” on the goings-on in Portland (hat tip to my friends at Twitchy Team):
When I saw Sean Hannity leading his show with "MORE VIOLENCE GRIPS PORTLAND" and scary video from the streets, I knew something was up… https://t.co/K9Wb2HF29r

Stelter was called out on his “conservative media is overreacting!” nonsense:
According to @brianstelter this isn’t happening and just being hyped up by “right wing media.” https://t.co/WYNpKl14Vg

… and had this hilarious response:
False. As I said on CNN, there are "real problems in Portland." I criticized the anarchists. But the right wing coverage is a "gross exaggeration." https://t.co/ZVMBWPxARv

A “gross exaggeration”? On any given day one can check independent journalist Andy Ngo’s Twitter feed for countless videos showing just how bad it is in Portland on a nightly basis. The reason there is more of a federal presence in Portland right now is because it looks more like a war-torn country than a major American city.
Perhaps the only way Stelter can truly get a real feel for what’s going down in Portland if he was to visit and do some embedded journalism, which was what the Federalist’s David Marcus suggested in a tweet that included one of Ngo’s numerous videos:
A good way for @brianstelter to prove his theory that right wing media is overreacting to the violence in Portland would be go out there and interview some of these very fine people. https://t.co/WPVUYPR4wU

This is a clever idea, but clever only in the sense that putting himself in the thick of the action to find out what’s happening would be new territory for a “journalist” like Stelter. But I’m not 100% sure that even then we’d finally get some honest coverage from CNN on the Portland riots. This is, after all, the same network that told us everything was coming up roses at CHAZ right up until the time the first murder happened. After that, they quickly ran away from the encampment as though it never existed.
Still, it’s worth a try to make the suggestion to Stelter. I’m sure he’ll get around to contemplating it once he and Oliver Darcy get done obsessing over Fox News.
