As we’ve written before here, the hot takes coming from Democrats and mainstream media types over the successful U.S. military strike against Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Iraq have been entirely predictable, mostly unhinged, and devoid of any real understanding of the volatile situation on the ground in the Middle East.
The warped condemnations from House and Senate Democrats – including those running for president – have been fast and furious. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is even planning on having the House vote to try and limit President Trump’s military powers as it relates to Iran.
So what’s a Senate Republican like Ted Cruz to do in the middle of all this?
Try to get Senate Democrats on board with a resolution praising the Trump administration’s handling of the Soleimani strike, that’s what, as Fox News reports:
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a noted Iran hawk, is circulating a resolution in the Senate that would commend the Trump administration for killing Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, aides told Fox News on Friday.
An aide said the resolution is “structured and worded the same way as a 2011 resolution that commended the Obama administration for killing Bin Laden, which received unanimous support in the Senate.” Cruz is trying to get Democrats on the record supporting the mission.
It’s an apparent effort by Republicans to try to dare Democrats to oppose virtually the same resolution the Senate adopted to applaud then President Barack Obama in 2011 after the killing of Osama bin Laden.
Cruz’s Senate colleague Lindsey Graham (R-SC) tweeted his support for Cruz’s resolution, which the Texas senator retweeted earlier today:
I very much support Senator @tedcruz's resolution in support of President @realDonaldTrump's decision to take out Iranian General Soleimani. https://t.co/TCDaBqkVB9

If Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) have their way, however, there won’t be any peace and harmony in the Senate on Iran:
The Senate must not let this President march into another war in the Middle East without debate and authorization from Congress. Yesterday I joined @timkaine to introduce a resolution preventing Pres. Trump from starting a war with Iran all on his own. https://t.co/f5ejxqdsT4
— Senator Dick Durbin (@SenatorDurbin) January 4, 2020
Thanks to Cocaine Mitch, I don’t look for that resolution to go anywhere, but I do expect Cruz’s to pass, which will just add another lay of egg to what’s already all over Democrats’ faces over this issue.
Stay tuned.
