Red State‘s Bonchie wrote earlier this week about how Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made it clear that votes on proposed legislation would not be delayed in spite of the fact that several Senators will be on the presidential debate stage. Per The Hill:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday dismissed a call by Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to delay passage of a mammoth defense bill until after the Democratic presidential debates so the entire chamber can vote on an Iran amendment.
McConnell, speaking from the Senate floor, brushed off the request from Schumer, saying Democrats missing the votes in order to take part in the Democratic presidential debates were prioritizing trying to win “the favor of the resistance.”
“I was incredulous to hear the Democratic leader call yesterday to postpone moving forward with the NDAA,” McConnell said, referring to the National Defense Authorization Act. “Apparently some of our Democratic friends need to go hit the presidential campaign trail. They can’t be here because they have to go campaign.”
As Bonchie noted in his post, McConnell’s decision to not delay votes was not just about needling the presidential candidates who were also members of the Senate. The bigger reason was because, you know, actual work needs to get done:
While Cocaine Mitch probably had sticking it to these do-nothing Democrats in the back of his mind, the truth is that remaining in session is absolutely crucial right now. They were already scheduled to be off the first week of July. While most of us get a single day off (and some no day off), Congress gets the entire week for some reason.
That means that there’s no way to take Thursday and Friday off, as working on immigration issues is vital right now. Trump agreed to a two-week delay in a major ICE deportation operation after Pelosi requested it. While a deal is unlikely, you can’t make an attempt at one if you take that entire two weeks off.
For good measure, though, the McConnell campaign wished the candidates good luck and tweaked them with some pre-debate prep suggestions of their own:
